I keep hearing guys saying that they have been accused of having selective hearing. Is this a treatable medical condition?

You haven't been accused of this yourself, have you? Or is it just selective comprehension for you? Selective hearing means you only HEAR or listen to what you SELECT to hear. If it's a compliment, you heard it loud and clear. She tells you sweet things, you listen to each and every word. But when she barks at you and tell you off, you turn deaf. She asks you to please go with her shopping at the mall, you didn't hear anything. It's more of a psychological/character illness actually, which apparently only affects males.

It's not a disease so there's no cure for it. The correct term is really "selective perception" - we tend to see only those that we want to see or we tend to interpret things that we see in a way less harmful to us. Same thing with selective hearing - out of all the 10 things said to us, we probably would only hear the 3 that we like the best; the other 7 that we don't like, we pretend we just didn't know or didn't hear about it.

I would say that there are more males who have selective hearing than females. That's because males are less capable of handling emotional stress so they just block whatever they feel they can't handle. Females, on the other hand, has no need for selective hearing; on the contrary we want to hear everything...we even make stuff up...from the little we know, we make it a big thing....LOL

Vive le difference!

NO it's not a medical condition and yes it can be treated. Selective hearing is choosing when to actually listen or just grabbing the words you want to hear. I could be treated with a smack in the face once in a while during a convo

Selective hearing in guys is when they make women think they are listening by saying ahuh or sure. When in reality they may only here a third of what us women are talking about. So it's not a medical condition that can be treated with medicine.

Selective hearing is an art perfected by men who have had or has a nagging gf or wife. Its when the hear only what they want to and not what is actually being said.
However, its not only men who have this little nagging quality about them. Women are just as bad about doing it as men are. We even teach our children to do it without knowing that we are doing it. It must be inherent in our lives.

Selective hearing-a medical condition? Haha.
That's when people tune out what they don't wanna hear and listen to what they do wanna hear. Kind of like, if a person is talking to another person and the one who is supposed to be listening doesn't seem to be and pretty much ignores them.

'Hope I helped!

No. It's just a saying that people use. They are saying this because they are only hearing what they want to out of a conversation.

im male but ill tell ya what it is....theres 2 types one your watching the game and your right into it and your wife says can ya bring back some milk you dont even hear her unless she says want a beer? that catches your attention. the other one is you only listen to what you wanna hear. if it doesnt interest you you unintentionally ignore it. its only treatment is you have to stop and actually listen to her lol, no matter what the topic.

a person hears only what he wants to hear, and disregards the rest.

LOL this made me giggle.

i guess it's treatable, if one learns how to pay attention and listen to others?

take care ( =
