You have a tooth that is hurting you,you go in, if your blood pressure is little high they make you get a paper from your doctor saying it's ok, they charge you for that visit, what is the diffrents that, that piece of paper going to make as long as I say it's alright and sign for it to be done. you go back now and the tooth is worst because he made you wait,he tells you you need to take antiabotic first and charges you for that visit and of couse you have to go back to get the tooth pulled and you are charged for that visit. If a doctor or a dentist care anything about you he wouldn't make all these charges,You almost spend 500.00 to get one tooth pulled when it would have only cost 175.00 in the first place includind the xray, what ripoffs when you are in pain and have no choice, that kind of money is hard to come up with and no insurence.

It's the same with all doctors/dentists, they wayyyyyy overcharge.

Why does your dentist even check your BP? Mine doesn't. My BP is okay but they don't check it in the first place.

I'm a dentist.

Your doctor didn't rip you off. You're just upset with the fact that he didn't see you for free.

The only thing your dentist did wrong was tell you to get a note from your physician saying it's ok to pull the tooth. That's his determination to make, not your physician's. If your physician says it's ok to pull the tooth even though your blood pressure is high, and you die in the dental chair while the dentist pulls the tooth, it's the dentist who will be in trouble, not the physician.

It is, however, perfectly normal for the doctor to refuse to treat you when your blood pressure is uncontrolled. You should be thankful that the doctor was playing it safe with your health. The medications we use as well as the procedure itself can both raise your blood pressure yet further.

Finally, do you think we dentists diagnose problems for free? Just because you point to the tooth doesn't mean we don't have to make a diagnosis. The evaluation is a separate service from the extraction, and we are entitled to charge you separate fees for both. Same with the x-rays.

If, however, the doctor charged you for an office visit each time you came, that would be inappropriate.

You are so right. I wanted to have some dental work done, but I refuse to be awake when they start pulling teeth - the moment they learned of my high blood pressure - they refused to do the surgery with me asleep. I think a lot of this goes along with the rest of the hiccups in the world - everybody is afraid of being sued, there are many people who will direct you to 'wellness' type clinics in order to 'save you money'. What I hate is if you don't call 2 hours prior to cancelling an appointment, many Doctors will charge you - but I have met my appointment only to find that my Doctor left for the day, or I had to wait 45 minutes AFTER my appointed time. How 'bout we charge them? One time I called and had to get another prescription and they asked "ME' for the names and numbers - I was like - "Hey, ya'll the doctor's office - pull my chart and see what I've been on for the last 8 years! I don't know that stuff by name! On top of that - when I am in pain, I need medication - my Doctor is so scared of writing for 'drugs' such as hydrocodone - but she knows that's the only thing that kills my pain. So when I have to rush into Emergency and they get me a room and she shows up asking stupid questions like' "Why did you wait so long to suffer in pain?" Duh!

It is potentially dangerous to remove a tooth on someone with high blood pressure, and yes, much of this pressure is due to the legal system.

It is also potentially dangerous to remove a tooth when there is an active infection going on.

Sorry to hear about your situation.
