Right click on My Computer and select properties. That should pop up a window that shows your general info and one of the lines will show what version of windows you are using.

find an original "my computer" icon (shorcuts don't work, there should be one in the start menu that you can use) right click, go to properties, it's listed under the general tab right up at the top. Or if you turn it on it usually shows the windows version on the windows startup screen

You can't see this as programs are not normally written with a specific version. The things that makes programs incompatable is the alteration to features they programs are using and the way they use RAM or if the are 16bit, 32bit or 64bit.h
