How Much Do You Need?
We need protein at all stages of life, for a variety of bodily functions. It's the major component of all cells, including muscle and bone. It's needed for growth, development, and immunity to fight off infections and protect the body.

The Institute of Health's Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) recommendations allow for a wide range of protein intake -- anywhere from 10% to 35% of total calories -- for normal, healthy adults. For example, on an 1,800 calorie diet, you could safely consume anywhere from 45 grams (that's 10% of calories) to 218 grams (35%) of protein per day.

However, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is 56 grams a day for men and 46 grams a day for women. Most Americans have no problem getting this much, but would struggle to take in enough protein to make up 35% of their calories.

That said, is it possible to eat too much protein?

"There are no dangers associated with higher intakes of protein -- unless you have kidney disease," says Layman.

To get the potential weight loss benefit, Layman advises aiming for around 120 grams of protein a day. "If you want to increase your protein intake, do it slowly over the course of a week," he recommends.

To be on the safe side, check with your doctor before adding large amounts of protein to your diet.

Like all things there is a balance to it. If you take in to much protein either in a day or at one setting the excess protein can be stored away as fat. As for your age, you've heard of teen bodybuilders or other young strength athletes? I'm sure you're not hurting your self any by taking Whey, just don't take in to much and don't make it your only source of protein.

Eating a lot of anything can make you gain weight. Protein and carbohydrates each have 4 calories per gram. Fats contain 9 calories per gram. Your system needs a balance of all three to function properly.

Even if you are into heavy weight training, your body does not require more than approx 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. (Interestingly, serious endurance athletes require more than even weight lifters - up to 2 g / lb of body weight.)

There's nothing wrong with supplementing with WPI if that's necessary, but successful bodybuilders will tell you straight up that eating a healthy balanced diet is far more important. That's because your body requires the nutrients you get from whole foods. Whey supplements provide additional protein, but that's about it.

As long as you balance out your diet, and aren't eating more than 2500 calories, you should be fine. I just finished the nutrition unit in school and I know all about it. If you are active, you should eat a max of about 2500. If you are very non active, then you should eat a max of about 1800 calories a day. If you get just the right amount of exercise(30 minutes to and hour, 3 times a week), then you should eat about 2000 calories a day. I would reccomend recording EVERYTHING you eat for 2 days. Separate the days.. And record the calories. My teacher made us record grams of protein, and carbs, and fat.. But you don't have to do that.. it's just breaking it down...

Just ask me if you need any more advice..

You can put on lbs. if you consume too much. At 14 it would seem your active and might burn most of it off.. Unless your lifting heavy weights or very athletic, I would not supplement with too much protein. My son is 14 and athletic.. I make him eat properly. He uses no whey. if he starts lifting heavier weights and on a regular basis. then I might recommend a whey shake in the am. or pm..

Yes, it has calories and all matters being equal, consuming additional protien will purpose you to acquire weight. If you happen to replacement carbs with protien, like switching from rice to an extra piece of chook,(assuming they have the same calorie worth) it could be a greater choice for shedding pounds, in the event you subscribe to the atkins eating regimen, and most effective in case you are already eating a low calorie weight loss plan. If you are eating a high calorie eating regimen, calories are calories, it doesn't matter what the supply (besides energy from fats is continuously worse)

Whey protein shakes, alone, will not lead to weight gain. Too much protein, though, is bad for your kidneys.

Eating a lot of anything will make you gain weight. If you are an athlete, you need only about 1.6 to 1.7 grams of protein per kg of body weight. Take your weight and divide by 2.2. The upper limit is 2 grams of protein per kg of body weight, so do not consume more than that. Too much protein can damage your kidneys.
