I make my grilled cheese sandwich with white bread and Velveeta cheese slices. First I toast my bread in the toaster, butter both pieces. Put a slice of cheese on both buttered slices. Put together and place in microwave until cheese melts. No skillets to clean and so easy to make.
Hope this helps..

Grilled Swiss Cheese on sliced sourdough bread with sauted mushrooms and onion. take a cup of sliced mushrooms and 1/2 a yellow onion sliced into strips , saute in 2tsp butter for about 3 minutes . then set aside, butter your bread then add your Swiss cheese 2 slices, then put in mushrooms and onion placing the other slice of bread on the top of the cheese and sauted veggies and grill in pan . This is very good you can add ham to this as well if your into ham .

Everyone else seem to have covered the normal methods of how to cook them, so I will add my 1970's college version. Butter two pieces of bread. Lay one piece, butter side-down on a piece of foil. Layer slices of cheese on top of this. Add the second buttered piece of bread on top of the cheese, butter side up this time. Wrap up the sandwich in the foil. Using a hot iron, iron the sandwich on both sides. I can't remember how long it took to melt the cheese, so if you are desperate enough to try it this way, you may have to unpeel the foil now and then to check on the cooking progress.
O. And serve with a cup of tomato soup. mmm-mmm-good!
These days, I use multi-grain bread and a sharp cheddar cheese. And a griddle!

Since Christmas, we don't make "grilled cheese" anymore, as I was given a professional Pannini Press (the Italian version of grilled ham and cheese) and have loved it since I bought it......The only downside to having it, is that panninis are now an "at home thing" and I've gained about 15 lbs since we've had this darned thing......but I wouldn't give it up for the world.......Grilled Italian Ham, Provolone Cheese and Pesto as a pannini..............Heaven on a plate!!!! Enjoy!!
