Covering the head is a cultural phenomina, and is not necessarily a tenant of Islam. Islam does encourage modesty, but this can be done in other ways. Many European countries are banning the use of full body coverings, the burqa, because a few Islamic extremist have used this to hide terroristic weapons, and to disguise themselves. Also, most democratic nations eschew the use of religious iconology in the public domain, because this promotes one religion over another. True democracies separate church and state. Citizens of the United States, however, have shown no serious concern about this. Perhaps this is because we are a nation of emigrants, and are more used to differences (even though you encounter a bigoted person here and there).

I personally like covering my hair. Usually I wear a snug head covering Egyptian or Arabic style with not a wisp of hair showing. Other times I wear a loose scarf that lets hair escape Pakistani style. It just depends on what I am doing.

Different cultures in Islam have different requirements for their women to be modest. What is modest in Pakistan would be a jailable offence in Saudi Arabia.

I don't understand why you ask if we should not. It is a choice just as wearing socks or not is a choice. What you are not getting is that the scarf is just a small but most obvious part of wearing hijab. Hijab is to cover the glory of a woman's hair and bosom. Hijab includes behaviour and mannerisms, even perfumes and clinking jewellery.

Why should they not?

I don't understand your question. Everywhere I look, I see both guys and girls wearing hoodies. This NEW fashion statement, coming from rap music has made covering the head a good thing (for the moment). It is so fashionable these thugs won't even take them off in the classrooms.

What makes it right for them and wrong for Muslim women? The fact that it will be getting hot soon?

If their wish is not to cover their hair, then they should not cover their hair. I know plenty of Muslims at my college who don't cover their hair. One girl told me it's a choice, and it is not necessary.

Why should Christians give their opinions without being asked to? Muslims don't insult them for eating a lifeless piece of bread or drinking blood.

there really is no reason why they shouldn't. this isn't such a great question to ask, because it is obligatory for muslims to wear the cover.

Because for some, it is used as a political statement to gain special treatment.

It's just as much their prerogative to cover it as it is anyone elses not to cover it. So the only reason I could give you would be if they don;t want to.

They can cover their hair, dye it purple, put glitter in it or shave it off, I really don't care.
It doesn't hurt anybody.

One reason is at some workplaces, nobody, no matter who you are, is allowed to wear headgear for safety reasons.
