Most of the above answers will help ... however, in response to YOUR question.....
Choose you model hard drive here :
http://support.wdc.com/download/
Then download the Data Lifeguard Tools for DOS (floppy) or CD.
Use the floppy or CD to boot the PC & go from there.
"The DOS version is required if installing a hard drive in a new system without existing operating system support. Version 11.0 includes a set drive size feature that was removed in version 11.2. If you need to change the physical capacity of your hard drive, you will need to download and use this version of Data Lifeguard Tools."

You can get Mr. Clean multisurface at any major grocery store and Walmart. Be gentle when you clean the top of the harddrive and don't clean the bottom, because there's all sorts of circuits and stuff that don't need to be Mr. Clean'd. After a good wipe with a soft towel, the harddrive should look as good as new! Make sure it's completely dry before reconnecting.

If you get http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ its got a nuke program in it. Just make sure your CD rom boots before your harddrive.
Also, when you delete things, they stay on the harddrive untill they are written over. The index to them is only deleted. If you want to hide whatever is on there there are programs that will write over your entire harddrive with random 1s & 0s so that the data can only be recovered by taking the harddrive apart, and spending lots of money to physically inspect it.

sourceforge.net has a dod wipe. i don't know how complicated it is or not. i have never used it myself
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Asourceforge.net+wipe
do not format! it won't get everything.
as you probably already know simply formatting a drive will not delete everything . a dod (department of defense wipe) put zeros everywhere on your drive and will make up to 7 passes to make cetain none of your data is left. even people that make a living at data recovery won't be able to revive it.
