I've only taken two lessons so far and I noticed that both times my shoulders and upper arms seemed a little sore the next day. Does holding them up for balance help you build muscle in your arms? Also, I have a hard time holding them up for a long time because my arms get tired so I have to put them down for a bit. Does holding them up for a long time eventually get easier?

yes, after a while it will get easier. You won't build bulky muscles from holding them up, but the muscles will get stronger. To make it easier to hold them up for long periods of time, work out on your own (off ice) doing weight lifting, push ups, etc. Your arms are really up for balance, so if you get really tired, you can put them down for a bit, but try and push yourself and keep them up. Good luck!

Yes, holding your arms up and using them to balance yourself uses them a lot which will help you build muscles in your arms. It does get easier to hold them up after you get them stronger, and you get used to it. Certain muscles are built more than others, but you do use your arms in skating.

yes, skating really helps your arms. because you hold them up all the time, it does build up muscle and it also improves posture. as you keep holding up your arms every time you skate they won't hurt that much and eventually you won't even notice it anymore. my coaches would make me do posture exercises before competing involving holding up my arms for about 2 minutes. it really helps so that you dont drop your arms while skating.

Well, holding them up is for balance and for muscle and for your posture. It gets tiring but you will get use to it. If you ever compete the judges judge you on your arms, to make sure they are up and steady. Good Luck!!!!

ys. and you can improve the muscles in your arms while you're sat in your chair.
just hold your hands out at shoulder height for 30-45 seconds.
keep doing it every so often and gradually you'll be able to do it for longer without it hurting so much

It is beneficial for your arms if you use them...leave them up, make movements. Its similar to what running using your arms does. And yes, it will eventually get easier. =]

Yes if you keep your arms up all the time they will get sore so dont be worried. It just means you don't have a lot of muscule in your arms. If you keep them up all the time the muscule will build aand it will get easier.

Oh yes, its a "Wonderful Excercise" for your whole body!! I used to try to go with my girlfriend when we were kids a couple of times, but I never got it, and was terrified of the blades cutting me!! My ankles just couldn't stay straight enough to do it, so after a couple of times, I quit going, with her!! She was great at it, and lost alot of weight during those days!! so I say "You Just "Go-Girl !!!" Have Fun!! Smile!!!
