My dog's hair is crazy, and I sometimes trim the hair around his eyes so he can see better.

If I trim the gnatty balls of hair around his mouth, and in turn his whiskers, will it hurt him?

No, he'll be fine. Whiskers are just thicker hairs.

No, it won’t do any harm. Whiskers are made of the same thing the rest of the fur is, so there is no feeling in them. In fact, many groomers will just trim the whiskers automatically, and you have to ask that they be left alone if you'd rather they not. Also, they do grow back, so it won't be permanent.

Some people say the whiskers are important, but some dogs need to have the fur around their face trimmed. If you are worried about it, take your dog to a groomer.

Hi,
Whiskers are not called whiskers they are called vibrissae. They are unlike the other hairs on the body. They are actually "alive" and have nerves in them. Scientific study has not done to very much research in this area of feline and canine. There is a good article on this at

Hope this helps.

It's just fine. As a matter of interest all show dogs have their whiskers trimed down or shaved off.

It is not painful to them, but it is a BAD idea. They use whiskers kindof like we use fingertips; to sense and feel their environment, and they feel awkward without them and often get dizzy if they're trimmed.
