I'd go with a Savage. There is any number of calibers suitable for deer hunting. I suspect in GA that you are hunting in moderately thick wood and have roads or firebreaks that would offer the possibility of a longer shot.
I would look at the .243 as a bare minim and also consider the 7MM Mauser, the 7MM-08, the 25WSSM, and the .308 Winchester. They are all adequate for shooting deer out any distance you are likely to have to shoot, and the short action on all of them will make them a bit lighter to carry around and shorter actions are stiffer and that helps with inherent accuracy.
Certainly there are a lot of other calibers that will work. If you have longer shots that I'm imagining then you can't go wrong with a .270 or even a 7MM Remington magnum or a 7MM WSM. But you will have a heavier gun and more recoil to deal with.
Good luck

Savage Arms makes some good, accurate guns for around $500. Remingto 700s are great guns as well. You can get one for about $700.
.243 is the legal minumum for deer but I'd go a little bigger. 6mm, .25-06, .257, .280, .284, and 7mm-08 are all good for deer. If you want a bigger caliber to have a more versatile rifle, definitely consider a .270, .308, or .30-06. Those three are capable of bringing down most North American game and the ammo is widely available. The .30-06 has the wides range of bullets weights making it the most versatile round of them all.

A 30-30 is a good/minimal priced rifle to begin deer hunting with. Plus once you get the 30-30 you can always save up and trade the 30-30 in on something more powerful/expensive!

I bought a used Marlin 336 lever action 30-30 with a scope for $250. This is considered an entry level deer gun. You can probably get one for this price or better in your area. You might also consider an H&R or other single shot brand in a deer hunting caliber.
If you have a shotgun and are short on cash, consider buying a rifled barrel for slugs or just an improved choke and shoot slugs out of your smooth barrel.

In this order, Savage $, Remington $$ and Browning $$$. For calibers anyone of these are great for medium sized game like deer, 308, 7mm-08, and 270.

I have a Mossberg 100 ATR i got for under $300, and love it. Its a .243, which is about the smallest gun you want to use on deer. they also sell them in a .270 i think and a .308? I got it at Walmart because it was so cheap, so if you have a Walmart that sells guns, make that your first stop.

It depends on the size of the deer, but a .270 will kill most types of deer accurately at long ranges (500-800 yards) and cost under $600 used.
