my son will turn 14 months on april 3rd and he still will not pick up his food and feed it to himself, he plays with it or throws it off his tray. i have to feed it to him on a spoon or fork he also will not hold a sippy cup unless he is lying down and only if put his hands on the cup. he bites the sippy cup(nuby) and quickly looks away then does it again...how can i make him learn?? i never had to have my daughter learn, she just learned.

I have a son and daughter also. It's been years since we ran in to this.
Ok, he's probably being lazy and a bit defiant. He is probably learning that he doesn't "have" to do it because the Mommy will do it for him. I'm sure he probably knows how to begin feeding himself.
My son did all of what you are talking about for a time, and we kinda had to take the "cowboy attitude".. don't know how else to put it. He'll eat when he's hungry and drink when he's thirsty.
We offered my son small quantities of his food and sippy cups, which they have made leaps and bounds with since he was little, and didn't make an effort to assist him in feeding himself during the first 2 mins of eating and gradually extended that time 30 seconds a day over a week or so period. Yes, he threw fits and made the whole dining experience a little stressful at first or he just played and made messes, which is normal for a child that age. Kids are trying to figure out textures and how things react when they play with it and etc.
But he slowly grasped that the Mommy wasn't going to feed him just because he was throwing a temper tantrum or made a mess. Same with drinking.
I know it seems a little harsh, but in principle it's the same way to address a child having issue with going to sleep with out someone in the room.
You have to realize no matter how hard it is to deal with he will grasp what you are teaching him. You also have to learn to tune him out and not acknowledge the temper tantrum or the mess. He can learn table manners when he gets more cognitive skills and understands more things.
You can also find cups that have straws in them, maybe he'll enjoy that more. The chewing on the nib of the sippy cup is probably part teething and part finding out about textures and etc. It's all normal on that front.

When my little one was that age she really didn't do it either. I just kept giving her opportunities and one day she just started to do that.
Also, as far as the sippy cup goes, have you tried the kind that's a straw? My girl just doesn't like to lift the other kind high enough to get the liquid but she drinks from a straw like a champ.
Don't feel bad, my older daughter just learned, too. Each child is different.

Its okay that he is not feeding himself yet. Just teach him. Try to get him to hold the spoon with you, he does not know how to use it yet. Hold the sippy cup up with his hands. It may get frustrating at times, but keep trying it will eventually work! Good luck! :)

all kids are different. and like you said you have a daughter who learned on her own and now you have a boy. they said boys are slow learners or maybe he is just lazy . my son who is 4 now didnt really ate by himself until he was 2 and never likes sippy cups and we bought tonz of different styles,he never used them. so just give him time and he will eventually eat by himself soon.
ps: my 4 yr old gets lazy sometimes and i feed him still.

Don't worry about it, he will eventually learn and do it himself. I think its a boy thing.... my two sons took forever to feed themselves - my oldest is almost 6 and will still sometimes beg me to "feed him". Ugh. Then my daughter practically when into cardiac arrest if I tried to help her started at 9 months - she insisted on feeding herself. He'll get there, don't worry!!

perfectly normal especially for a boy. (just look at men. ha ha)
He will do it when he is ready
I have a boy and a girl and they are very different. My 3 year old girl is independent while my 4 year old boy doesnt want to do anything-he'd rather I did it! (again, just like a man)
best of luck! :-)
