(lame) Letterman co-owns an INDYCAR team not nascar. Plenty of outside people own teams, Joe Gibbs is an NFL guy and Aikman probably gained inspiration from his success. Plus the cat in the hat Jack roush sold out half to a redsox team owner, they need something to do after their short seasons compared with nascar's longer one.

Roger Staubach is part owner along with Troy Aikman on the Hall of Fame Racing team. Terry Bradshaw stepped down from what was Fitz/Bradshaw Racing. Magic Johnson is very involved with the diversity program NASCAR is pushing and I could see him becoming a part owner someday (maybe if Bubba Stewart comes to NASCAR).

These may not be the sexy celebrity names that you're looking for, but they are sports related, and their primary focus is outside of NASCAR.

George Gillet Jr. who currently owns the Montreal Canadiens and the Molson Centre is in talks with Ray Evernham about a possible partnership. This is kind of the biggest news in ownership circles as of late.

John Henry - the Boston Red Sox Owner - has a stake in Roush racing.

Joe Gibbs and Dan Marino are from football - would that be considered "outside?" But many of the team owners are not previous racers, they may have been around NASCAR for a long time but aren't former racers.
