Honestly, the best you can probably hope for is mutual tolerance. You need to teach the dog not to chase the cat (which will help with the dog's popularity with the cat). I have a dog that is too interested in the cats and I simply scold her when she starts pestering or chasing the cats. I also make sure the cats have a dog free area they can get to so that they feel safe. Teaching the dog a "leave it" command will go a long way in getting you to your goal.

What breed of dog do you have? Is the breed one for bred for hunting small animals? How old is your dog? Though not always, some dogs that were bred to hunt small animals and were not introduced to cats at a young age, may never get along with cats. Also, when did you get your cat? Chances are if you give it some time, they will bond.

You may not be able to. Some dogs and cats just do not get along. You can try to gradually get them used to each other. I would not leave them alone together until you are absolutely sure it is safe. They can fight, and the kitty would probably get the worst end of the deal.
It may be possible in time to get them to get along, but BEST friends?...that might be asking too much.

all new relationships are something that needs work, just make sure they have their own areas to relax in for awhile, time will be the best answer to the question if they will get along.
you might have to teach your dog some new manners, though....

Light your house on fire, then the two of them will have to work together to rescue you. They'll bond and be friends for life !
