I always hear that muscle burns fat. Yet I am VERY muscular AND very fat. Whenever I try to lose weight, I end up gaining because I build muscle but don't burn the fat. I've grown desperate and I'm considering lipo, but I hope there's another way.

I've been dancing for about an hour everyday (latin/tropical-very cardio) and thought I'd lost some weight, but this morning I weighed 2 pounds MORE. I also follow a low carb diet, which worked before but it's doing NOTHING now. I've also being working at an eliptical trainer. NOTHING. What can I do?

Thanks for the imput, but I have done pilates and I'm not really bulky. Just very firm under all the fat. It's the FAT that's frustrating me

It's all about the diet! Keep working out, but watch what you eat. The low-carb diet can work, but it isn't a lifestyle that is maintainable. Have you ever tried Weight Watchers? That diet is a little easier to follow and you can eat whatever you desire in moderation. I have a similar body issue because I gain muscle rather quickly, but have trouble burning off the fat. It will take a lot of work, but if you consider trying to eat as healthy as you can and still maintain an exercise regimen, you should see results. If not, you might want to check with your doctor about a thyroid problem or something that might be causing your metabolism to be slow. Good Luck and keep trying!

Well I've found that the best way is to make sure that you are burning more calories that you are consuming. It also helps to cut out refined sugars. That means no more white breads (eat breads that you can literally see the grains/seeds). Just drink water and teas. It is suprising how many calories are in soda and juices. It is much better to eat the actual fruit rather drink it because you get all that fiber which helps fill you up. It sounds like you are doing a lot of cardio so that is good...it must be your diet. I would definely look at calories rather than carbs.

Do toning exercises instead of weights. Pilate's is a great low impact workout that tones really well. Walking instead of running will burn calories and fat without building a ton of extra muscle. There are other exercises out there too that will work. Talk to your doctor or a trainer.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!

The question is more of how you look. Do you or your family members see a better-looking, slimmer you? Do you feel better and have more energy?
We must be careful not to get obsessed with numbers and just notice if we look better. We must also take body type into account. It is possible, based on your description, that your body type is going to allow for only so much improvement.
