I have a cockatiel that recently lost his friend. :( I want to get him another bird, eventually. I was wandering if a conure would be ok. If so, which ones would be nice to Misty. I dont want misty to get picked on or hurt, so if getting another cockatiel is the only way, then i will take it. I love cockatiels, i just want to try new things and maybe get more experienced in other birds, without endangering my cockatiel. So any opinon would be of great help. thanks

Cockatiels can get along with other birds about the same size as they are. Be warned, though, that tiels very sweet birds who tend to get bullied. Even budgies will keep them from a food bowl if there's not enough feeding stations! I'd be worried more about the other bird attacking the tiel than the other way around.

With that said, I know of many birdy partnerships among cockatiels and budgies, small conures and even a pionus parrot. ^.^ Cockatiels are pretty laid back and if given enough time they'll form friendships with any bird as long as their interactions are closely watched. My first conure, a Peach Front Conure, was bonded to my present breeder cock before he died. I just couldn't keep them in the same carrier or they fought like kids. But when they were in the aviary, they were feeding and following each other around. My youngest budgie hen was bonded to one of my first cockatiel hens. She even solicited mating from her. It was pretty funny to watch!

Since your bird has already had another friend who was a cockateil I would suggest getting another cockatiel, getting another bird is another possibility(like a parakeet) but I'm not sure how your bird would react to another species. You don't want to endanger either bird. Another cockatiel would be the best since its used to another of its own kind. You may want to get another cockatiel that looks similar to your old one that way your bird Misty is already comfortable with it. Hope it helps!

i'd stick with another cockatiel. from what i know, it'd not usually advisable to mix different kinds of birds together. there are people who do, but most people will tell you it's not a good idea. even birds as small as parakeets can attack cockatiels. cockatiels are fairly docile birds and the smaller, more aggressive birds can really aggravate them.

my parakeets are very aggressive towards my cockatiel; he's scared to death of them. however, we did have one parakeet who my cockatiel got along with, but again, it really depends on the two birds.

i would never house any two birds together (even of the same species) until 1) the new bird has been quarantined for 30 days (to prevent stress and possible illness to the other bird) and 2) you've had time to watch them together and see how they react to one another. even if you get another cockatiel, these guidelines should be followed. you can't just shove two birds together no matter what the species; even if they're the same.

if you do get another bird, be prepared for the scenario that they might not get along. i don't know how likely it is, but you always need to be aware that if the two birds do not get along, they will have to live separately. i have a parakeet i brought home awhile back and my current female does not get along with her. so, the two females have to be caged seperately.

good luck! please think very carefully before bringing another bird home! though they are wonderful creatures, we must take care of them for their entire life. :)

With some of the smaller parrot species such as the Budgie several different types of Parakeets, or the Cockatiel, you probably will be fine with some of each species as long as the cage or flight is spacious enough. If you get another bird you should pay close attention to them to make sure they don't fight. I would get another cockatiel though.

Cockatiels tend to not liek other birds too much. Another cockatiel would be fine but I wouldnt mix other than that. I had a cockatiel and two doves and the cockatiel tried to attack the doves through her cage but when the doves werent around she was sweet. She had to go live in another room because I let the birds fly free and she was attcking them.

WOW you have a cocketeil they are so fun to be around i had mine for 14 years. He was beautiful!!!!! They absolutely love company but i would suggest getting another cocketil. Take it step by step. First put a mirror in with your bird if he seems to be ok with it then introduce him to the REAL bird. If your bird has issues then get another cage and put them beside each other they will soon become best friends i promise. But since he lost his friend :( be sure to tske your birds feelings into consideration. You need to make sure that it's ready,

Cockatiels generally don't get along with other birds, but when mine lost his mate, he got so depressed I put a female budgie in with him. After a few days, and a few battle wounds they were able to co exist and the cockatiel started eating again, but the realtionship was never as close as the one that he had with his mate.
