It is generally the same error when trying to start the Scan Disk under XP (assuming you have XP). Your primary drive (c) is in use by Xp and it needs to be dismounted first before running scan on that drive.
One possible solution to this problem would be to run scan disk through command prompt. Try running following command:
chkdsk [volume:] /f] [/r]
The parameters will perform a full scan on the drive as well as recovering the bad sectors.
This will ask you to whether to scan the drive on next restart. Type yes.
This should work with your problem.

On Windows XP you technically can't use scandisk, with XP, but you can use chkdsk while in virutal dos mode by going to start, all programs, accerises, Command Prompt, and typing in chkdsk.
By default, CHKDSK neither fixes errors nor checks for bad sectors. In order to fix errors while using the command line interface, the /F parameter should be specified. In order to check for and mark bad sectors, the /R parameter should be specified. Other parameters can be listed by typing the command chkdsk /?
Yes, there is a actual Aids virus for peoples computers, plus several subtypes.
In this case, with the information you posted, I don't think your pc actually has the Aids virus, but to be on the safe side,

close all windows. then on your desktop click the my computer icon. right click the drive icon you want then click on properties to run scan disk.
your computer cannot be used for anything else while running scandisk.
set it up to run in the "thorogh" mode and set it to "fix errors automatically".
running scan disk can take more than 24 hours on todays large hard drives.
here are some apps that might speed that up.

This depends on your operating system. Windows XP does not use ScanDisk, per se. Read this article for how to use this if you have XP:
