You can not, that is the lesson. You are not the desires, that is true, but what you are does desire. And if you feed the desire it does grow.

Here are two suggestions. Firstly you can learn to understand your desires. I think after we find out why we want something it often has less attraction. But be honest!
And secondly you can distract yourself from them by concentrating on what you DO have. I found that as I then began to appreciate what I had more, my desire for what I didn't have reduced.
Just an idea. Good luck! And remember. You're human (or a cat). Either way, are your desires not part of you? Would you cut off your hand (paw)? If you had NO desires, what would drive you to improve? To eat? So be selective.

~~~Snoflake,,,, Firstly,,, keep perspective. Not ALL desires are Self-ish,,, BUT,,,,you MUST come to an Understanding with yourself and Identify just what desires you do have are Ego Based. For instance,,, what compels you to make as much money as you do, or what is your motivation for wanting more money than you have now. Do you want to Party, improve your-self or someone else? So your first inquiries to yourself should establish these Basic Foundations of what Motivates you to make these decisions. I personally practice Living The Golden Rule and conduct acts of Anonymous Altruism.
Don't attach so much importance to stuff.
Ask yourself "is this really a big deal?"
-- It probably isn't.
If it is a big deal, it won't go away.
Just don't make a big deal of things.
Practice compassionate detachment. In other words, be compassionate toward others, but don't get so involved.
Same goes for your desires.
Why would you want to detach from your desires?
Desires are human nature.
We only need to understand, face it, deal with it.
We're responsible for all our choice of actions.
Therefore, to understand well about our desires will help us to deal with it to the best of our interests while not conflicting with other people's interests at the same time.
