Well for me i aplyed for both, ssi , and ssa, or some call it ssd, i received both, and then my ssi after a back payment check which the state could take, took that check for the money they had given for my care through medical from DSHS. But the SSA they could not touch. If you only get the ssi you will get the macks if you do not have an income, and that is in the 6 hundred dallor range now. SSA they go by your last work quarters. If you work at least 10 years in a roll, you can get over a thousand dallars , some receive a lot more then that.
At this time i only get around 7 hundred dallars, and after two years on it you get medicare too. Either way they take out money if you get medicare benifits, so it does not leave you much. But it pays my rent, and all of my bills, and sometimes i actually have a little left over, now when i become retirerment age, i will recieve even more. If you have childern under the age 18, or if they r 18 and in school, you will receive money ( a check for each child in school) to help pay for their clothing, and food, and other things that they need. Now i know people that get like 1000 dallars, and others that get 1700 hundred dallars and some even receive more then that. But i would say the average person gets around 7 hundred dallars a month. It is just enough to pay your bills, now your payment also goes by the state you live in. I have a cousin that got less money when she lived in this state, and when she moved to another state, she got about 5 hundred dallars more. So i have heard that other states will pay more then the state that i am in. I have PDST, and a personality disorder, and depression, and OCD, so i am not able to work any more. Now i have some pyschial problems which could take it up. I still get DSHS , and food from the state, cause my check is not that large. But yea if you can not work, it is better then nothing, at least you can get a place to live, and pay your bills. Now SSI goes by if you are living with someone that works, if you are they will cut it shorter, cause the other person is working. SSI is a suppment income, for the people that have not ever worked, but if you get SSI you are asuraned to get Medical, and Food Assitant from DSHS. With out worrying about a spin down, or being cut off from them, cause you make to much, but on SSA and SSD you have to keep applying for the DSHS, and some times you get a spin down, before you can get the medical part from them. The last i knew about that they payed checks for each child in the family too as long as they were still in school. So if you have not applied yet you should, and from there they can tell you what you will get, and about how much. When i was working i was working a lot of overtime, and was in a top paying job, but at that time what was thought to be a lot of money, is nothing to what people make now adays, and they took like how much i was payed. But as i had said yes, in different states you will get a lot more, then you do in the state that i am living in. So if you move to different states then you will get what they would pay you. It is at least worth looking into since now they have a program to pay for your medication. Plus if you get one of them, and then get the DSHS, if you have to go into the hosiptal, well one pays most of your bill, and the other one will pick up the little that is not paid. So i would say at least look into it. No they can not touch your back pay check if you get SS, SSA, or SSD. only SSI can the goverment touch. I know it has helped me to get by. I hope this has answered your question.
