Just wondering if there's one gal/guy out there that is considered the top violist that does solo work. Would love to get some album recommendations too please.

I know Esra Pehlivanli as a violist, I've been to one of her concerts and liked her very much. I know she graduated with the first degree (I don't know if you say so in English, I mean the top student) from music school. She's had lots of awards and a medal and still performs in concerts thoughout Europe, solo and takes part in chamber music (Not sure about the term) concerts. I don't know where you live but I think you can find her albums. Hope this will help.

In terms of how many albums they've sold, concert dates, etc., three of the biggest names stick active are Nigel Kennedy, Joshua Bell, and Midori (run their names in Amazon's music dept and you'll see how much they've produced). There's also Andre Rieu, who has made a big splash internationally but is more of a "popular" violinist than a "classical" one.

Although he primarily has won well-deserved fame as a violinist, Pinchas Zukermann is also a very fine violist.

For example, he has teamed up with violinist Itzhak Perlman to record Mozart's two Duos for Violin and Viola (K. 423 and 424), which is as good a performance of these pieces as I can ever imagine.

how about Kim Khatchaturian? She's become well known . As you are probably aware, your instrument is not high up on the "goes solo" list, so it's rather difficult to give you a well reasoned answer. sorry.
