My dog Nikki died a few months ago. She was 13.
She developed tumors in her front leg and one on her stomach 5 years ago.
She was a very happy dog and I don't believe that she had any pain.
We elected not to have surgery because she was 8 years old an it would have been expensive and a potential risk,
One day, she just laid down and died. She is buried in our yard.
If you think that your dog is in pain...you have to make a choice.
But if he has a smile on his face and a little frisky don't worry about the tumor unless it bothers you!
I do miss her...but she had a very good life.
Good luck

Sometimes they're just fatty tumors, not malignant, but they still need to be removed, especially if its getting large. They can be very uncomfortable. It's very rare for a dog to die under anesthesia. Is your dog neutered? If so, he's already been under anesthesia and that will show that he most likely won't have any problems with it. As dogs age, just like people, they are prone to get lumps and tumors. Let the vet take the tumor off, as soon as possible, just in case it is cancer maybe he can remove it before it spreads. Good luck and don't worry too much. Our old lab had many of those tumors (non-malignant), and he lived to be 15, though the tumors started at about the same age your dog is.

I just had a lump removed from the breast of my 8 year old spayed female Doberman... It was amazingly easy on her. When I went to pick her up, minutes after she woke up, she was standing, eyes bright and tail wagging. I thought maybe they hadn't done the surgery yet. She was absolutely the same as she was when we arrived, less the lump. The vet knows the age of your dog, he knows how much and what kind of anesthesia to use on a dog that is getting older.
Talk to your vet, tell him your concerns and hear what he has to say.
My dog is in great health, take that into consideration too. If he is ailing in any other way, then you might want to reconsider the whole thing.

You won't know what it is for sure til it is cut off and sent to the laboratory. Animals don't usually die under anesthesia. It is a risk, same as in humans.
Labs as a breed are usually not real healthy as old dogs... but he should have at least 2 more good years left! I say go for the Sx!

The anesthesias used now a days are typically very safe. The important thing with older pets is to make sure they are healthy enough for surgery, so he should have a full blood work panel done before, to make sure his kidneys and liver (which metabolize the anesthetic) are functioning well. You should also have chest and abdominal xrays done. If the growth is cancerous, you need to make sure it has not metastized to other parts of his body internally. If it has, you may decide surgery is not the best option.

the superb component to do is communicate on your vet he ought to propose you greater advantageous than everyone. i latterly placed a impressive dogs down by way of fact maximum cancers had long gone to her innovations and he or she became commencing as much as get aggressive with different animals no longer people. that is greater advantageous to place them down than to enable them to go through. It harm truly undesirable and time does heal the wear. at last you bear in mind the sturdy cases. sturdy success and would peace be with you in this hard time.
