Hiccups can be recieved in several ways. For one, if you are drinking a soda and you swallow a bubble, once the bubble is popped, the air is let out into your stomach. The air tries to get out, thusly causing you to hiccup.

Secondly, you could have something in your throat obstructing the path of air into your stomach. Likewise, the excess air in your stomach will try to pump out the piece of food. (This doesn't usually work...) So, you hiccup!
