I haven't been to Thailand since 2001 and I'm wondering is it still safe cause I been hearing a lot about how dangerous the south can be. I hope the Thai government fix things up soon, I don't understand the Muslims....

Thailand is as safe as it was in 2001. The south maybe a bit of a problem due to insurgency but otherwise, the rest of the country is pretty safe as back home.

Of course, you can expect some degree of crime at such tourist places and depending on where you plan to go, just the basic precautions would suffice.

If you are planning to go and live in Pattaya for a while, I suggest you go to the website of a weekly tabloid called Pattaya People. They carry a lot of crime stories which would give you a clear indication of what happens there. Similar websites are available for other major cities in Thailand.

I was in Bangkok all last week; all was fine there. The only problem was traffic when there was an anti-junta demonstration near the Grand Palace. The south can be dangerous (over 2000 people killed in the last six months in spite of the junta's claim they were going to end the bombings and killings). I also cannot understand people willing to kill in order to oppose what is, after all, a personal matter of religion. Although Thailand is considering a part of the new constitution stating it is a Buddhist nation, this will probably not be in the final draft. Hopes that the junta would make things better seem to have been dashed.

Thailand is still mostly safe, except for the south as you can see. Everyone wants to see the problem resolve because it is bringing much sufferings there. The people there are not having a peaceful life and never know when or where the militants will strike next.
it will be good if the govt can isolate the militants from the civilians and deal with them accordingly.

There are many places to see besides the "south," where there are some problems in certain places like Yala. NO sane person can understand Muslim terrorists, and they shpould be rooted out and destroyed once and for all BTW. Just use common sense in Thailand. Occasionally, tourists get rolled or even attacked in places like Pattaya, but they are usually the ones drinking in their rooms with women they don't really know or in the wrong place.

Thailand is a very safe country for tourist to visit. Most of the violents that you read about is in the southern most 3 or 4 provinces which are not tourist areas. Resorts like Phuket, Samui, Krabi are safer then most U.S. cities. Crime will happen, however, if you don't get involved in illegal matters you will have no problems here.

If you don't have problems in your home country, it is unlikely that you will have problems here. I live here and never ever feel in danger.. So, if you don't get drunk and do something stupid - you will probably be fine and as others mention, avoid the southern provinces - - have a great trip !!
