The British were not intentionally in Iranian waters, if they were at all. They were delivering patrol boats from Umm Qasr to Basra, Iraq for the new Iraqi Riverine Patrol Service. En route they spotted a suspicious cargo ship also headed for Basra they suspected of illegally smuggling cars and stopped it in Iraqi waters for inspection. They had completed their inspection when they were kidnapped and their inflatables were seized by six Iranian Navy vessels.
The river is basically divided down the middle, the western half being in Iraq and the eastern half in Iran. The Iranian claims are bogus because they say the British were 1,000 meters inside of Iranian territory, but the river itself is not 3,000 meters wide at its widest point. To be that far inside Iranian waters they literally would have had to be hugging the Iranian shoreline at the waterway's widest point, and beyond that it would have been totally impossible. Between Umm and Basra, the river is only 250-500 meters wide.
The Iranians even admitted that the boats were unarmed and the sailors only carried small sidearms, as is common practice.
Anyway, recent reports are that they British sailors have been released unharmed and the boats are going to be sent to Basra.

Two sides to every story, if the British pointed to a spot on the map to show you where they were operating and this spot was ' in dispute ', you think its your spot Iraq thinks its their spot.
An Iraq fishing vessel was in the same area at the time he will testify that the Brits were in Iraq water, he believes that spot of water belongs to Iraq, you don't.
As far as the UN are concerned that spot was covered by the Brits and sanctioned by the UN.
With your little rant about being ready for war I can see you are full of righteous indignation! You are willing to die for your republic you are willing to see thousands of your people die, over a drop of water!
Not only your people will die, a lot of people will die if there is a war between you and the West.
When I say 'if' I should say 'when' because I cant see any way out of it now. If this little problem is sorted another will soon pop up.
Have you ever been in a battle and seen a friend die, or women and children die? Have you given a thought to the families or the future of the world.
"We are ready" you say! You sound like an over hyped American "Bring it on" they would say!
Neither of you are hero's, you have both been reading too many comic books or religious books.
I am not a 'bleeding heart liberal' I know the fight against Hitler was just, I have been in the army, I have seen friends die, I didnt feel heroic they didnt feel heroic , we were doing as we were told, we belived whatever we were told to believe !
Now if you are just a normal citizen and not completey brain washed just think about the families, and the fact that there are two sides to every story.
I cant really see any way out of a war between you (Iran)and the West, even if this little thing is resolved some thing else will pop up soon. We will then have an almighty bust up between the Muslim world and non Muslims.
Does that make you happy?????
"Bring it on" "We are prepared"
As an atheist I cant say "God help us all" I can suggest that those who advocate war should be given a plot of land and be allowed to throw bombs at each other, then fight each other hand to hand, kill each other in a large field, these folk will all be polititcans of course or religious leaders and not usaully involved with that sort of activity.

The British weren't in the Iranian waters. Go to www.bbcnews.com and check out what the Royal Navy says about this.

Well first off, get your facts straight. The Iranian "merchant "vessel was in Iraqi waters when borded. There was stong suspicioun that it was being used to traffic arms into Iraq. It was forced in to Iranian waters after the fact. They will be returned, Iran is not that stupoid or desperate yet. This is an obvious showing that they are growing bolder, however. I am sure that the resent pull out of some British troops and our ongoing show of weakness via Congress and the mainstream media has aided their cause.

They are doing what they have always done, flouting any law that they do not agree with, committing criminal acts against a neutral country, I am sick of people saying our armed forces are only doing a humanitarian service they are an occupying army and trying to force the Iranians into committing the crimes that the British forces are currently committing.

Same as all the other problems with the Middle East it's down to propaganda. the Iranians want to do something that the Yanks do not want them to do and because our sailors are the only ones in the ares they pick on them. Of course if the Yanks had been in the same position there would have been all out war by now. the sooner the Yanks are left with their mess the better.

How do you know they were in Iranian water? that is disputed. You can't draw a border down a stretch of water as you can on land, so disputes are inevitable. It is ridicuous for them to take a hard and inflexible line on this.

If the UK was in Iranian water, do you really think they would try to attack in a rubber dingy? This is clearly an over reaction on the part of Iran. And you wonder why the rest of the world ostracizes you?

If an Iranian vessel came into British waters we would give them civil and humane treatment. I do hope the Iranians do the same with our men.

The Iranian boundary and the official boundary is DIFFERENT!
The British was NOT in the official Iranian waters, BUT were escorted INTO Iranian waters, by Iranian warships"
Please get your facts right, before complaining!
