This is not a DJ.

It is a version of the famous painting.

The Treachery Of Images (La trahison des images) is a painting by Belgian Surrealist painter René Magritte, famous for its inscription Ceci n'est pas une pipe or "this is not a pipe".

The picture shows a pipe that looks as though it might come from a tobacco store advertisement. Magritte painted below the pipe "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" (This is not a pipe), which seems a contradiction, but is actually true: the painting is not a pipe; it is an image of a pipe. As Magritte himself commented: "Just try to stuff it with tobacco! If I were to have had written on my picture 'This is a pipe' I would have been lying."

It means "this is not a DJ", the reason its femine is because women have developed arms in the last couple decades, and have the ability to spin. It isn't incorrect to say ceci n'est pas, because, just like in english, you dont have to refer to everything by its corresponding pronoun (it can be an object!). The reason it is spelled like this is because it copies aVERY famous painting by Rene Magritte, a belgian painter of the early twentieth century, called "ceci n'est pas une pipe".

What does the picture show? It sounds like the picture is a joke, and the 'ceci...' bit is the punchline. Without knowing what the picture shows, it's difficult to give you a translation.

(DJ is masculine)

That's not a DJ?

But, why is it femine "une", I wonder; and why is it ceci, it should have been "elle"?

Cheers!

Well, if Ceci is a name, then it means "Ceci is not a DJ."

If you mean"ceci," then it means "It/This is not a DJ."
