Photographers, if you had to choose between the Canon 30D and the Nikon D80, which would you choose and why? I'm not too concerned with lenses at this time, I pretty much know which direction to go there, just concerned with a good body. I'm a novice photographer switching my platform to digital and I'm really torn between the two, with the biggest difference between them being price. As a newcomer to photography, should I concern myself with buying a good body, regardless of price, or is one truely better than the other?

Step back a moment...although there are other factors at work, this decision is very much about lenses. I would choose the 30D..mainly because I have a small fortune invested in Canon lenses. These are both very capable cameras and claiming one is better almost borders on a debate around religion.

If you own no lenses and are just starting, the best thing to do is handle both cameras. Use the menus, try out the different modes. Also look into the first few lenses you want to buy and think about how much total you want to invest. Also factor in whether there is a local shop that favors one brand over another. You might also check with friends and see what they have (borrowing and trading lenses can be fun!). At the end of the day, you can't really go wrong, but other than the handling and feel of the camera, it is very much about lens systems and which one best suits your needs.

I own Nikon equipment and of course I am going to tell you how wonderful nikon equipment is(and it is), but that does not answer your question. You cant go wrong with either camera , they are both battle tested and of the highest quality, Both have great lenses and a huge assortment of lenses available from companies such as sigma, tamron and the likes which are usualy cheaper than the brand name yet result in the same image quality, at least from a novices point of view. It comes down to what you want to spend, get the best deal on either one of the cameras and start shooting, i dont believe that you will be disappionted with either camera.

The overall cost of ownership will be considerably less with the Canon system. Nikon is a much smaller company and their manufacturing output is considerably less.
With the turnover in technologly, the cost of ownership and life span may be a consideration in your choice....
