.... why oh why don't they (the supermarkets) train their checkout operators to pack PROPERLY !!!!!
This divvy at Asda today got a pack of four egg custard tarts and then proceeded to put a 5lb bag of potatoes on top of it!!
I HATE it when they have asked if you would like some help with your packing, and you say 'No, thank you'. Then THEY decide to do some of it for you! It really gets my back up, and my hubby says he can see me physically change when they start doing this. I always have to say 'Do you mind if I do my own packing?'.
Other checkout mishaps have been:
Fresh prawns in with Persil washing powder !
Ice cream with a freshly roasted chicken !
Grapes with cartons of orange juice on top of them !
What 'mishaps' have you encountered?
Is there anyone else out there like me, or am I one of a kind?

paintedtearz: Why don't you people READ the question first BEFORE you type your answer! I ALWAYS SAY NO THANK YOU - when they ask if I want help!!!!!!!!!! THEY don't listen to ME!! I am the customer - it's ME they have to please, not THEM I have to please!!

I hate it too especially when they put soap in with baguettes!!!
I prefer to do my own packing so that I can put the bags in the house and all my smellies are together, fruit and veg together, packets and stuff are together, fresh meat, frozen are all neatly packed together!! I agree with you. Please learn to pack shopping correctly... Men are the worse!!

No, I can totally empathise! I used to work in a supermarket (Sainsburys) and used to help out on check outs (NOT always by choice lol). I'm quite conscious about packing properly (as I do for myself - I even loads things onto the belt in their own wee groups to pack lol). The thing is, you're told to pack the first 5 items. This is going to sound bad, but some on check outs really don't have a clue. I've worked with some lovely people as well as the most sour faced people you could ever get! You're stuck there doing the same thing for hours, saying the same things over and over again and it's quite easy for some to not care any more how they pack. I agree though, it's not good customer service and doesn't encourage people to come back for more! lol

I hate it when I say i dont need any help, which i dont - i`m a big girl, i can pack a bag- and they proceed to whizz your shopping through at the speed of light as if to say "I`ll teach you to refuse my offer of help"
Tesco are awful for this!
I also hate it when theyhave another staff member stood at the end automatically helping with packing - waitrose do this - coz the packer and cashier just chinwag to each other the whole time!
I`m like you too, I cant just shut my mouth, I have to tell them what they are doing that is annoying me! lol

I agree. It almost becomes an insult when they can see you are perfectly capable and want to do it yourself.
I am sure this is just down to bad training.remember these people are not paid to think for themselves. The management would be better advised to use the packers to keep on top of the vegetable aisle.Whenever I visit any of the 4 main supermarkets, whatever time of day, same old story, they have run out of loads of stuff.
Jack of all trades , master of none!

I hear you! I've written LETTERS to store management before BEGGING them to teach their employees how to package groceries properly. I HATE it when they put ALL of the canned items in one bag. Or when they load up a bag and you have to ask them to double it.
I've suffered the same "roasted chicken" fiasco. Hot chicken with frozen foods. WTH are you thinking?
Delicate cheeses thrown in the bottom of bags and heavier items thrown on top.
I've had cartons of eggs put on the top of an already over-loaded bag. You can be sure they didn't make it home. Grrr!

In one particular Supermarket it is not company policy for the cashier to pack all of a customers shopping.Company policy is ONLY to open the bags and offer help to the customer NOT pack everything.Offering help means packing the first item only.
I suggest next time you pack your own things, then you cannot complain can you? Solve the problem instead of moaning.
Cashiers are underpaid and over-worked, Customers like you are probably the reason why the cashier packed the way they did.
Moofies...I'm afraid what I have stated is company policy. If you don't like it you should take it up with the supermarket itself because if the cashier does not do this, they can be disciplined.Personally I agree with you, customers should do their own packing because it is much faster. Most customers just stand there while the cashier packs and scans 5 or 6 bags of shopping.Generally, customers do not want to do anything for themselves at all. They are lazy. It's nice to see there are customers like yourself who are not and want to do their own packing.By the way,the one I am talking about is not Asda.

I work at Food Lion and to be honest with no one ever said anything to me about how to bag groceries. I guess it just comes down to common sense. Some people are just either stupid or just don't give a #!%#$ about you or your groceries. Or both. I myself do care cause I would want you to pack my groceries right. Oh well, no worries just take a deep breathe and let it roll off your back.

my local Tesco isn't too bad except they try to put too much in one bag, usually the heaviest stuff for some reason. they insist on putting 3x2 lire cartons of milk in a bag. i can't even lift the piggin' thing up, let alone get it in the trolley. then i have to take one out and put it in another bag.
i often wonder do they do this with frail little senior citizens. they just dont think.

We've started to take 2-3 trolleys to handle this problem.I take kids with me.Cleaning items go in one trolley.Packaged food in second and fresh fruits and veges in third. When one trolley is emptyed on cash counter,we dont put or let them put stuff from the second trolley untill the first one's stuff have been packed. Helps much!

It used to happen to me but most of the time I use self checkout or tell them I want to do it myself. If I have to let them do it I put the items on the counter so they are bagged together.
