A friend wants to join the police department, next year sometime. He's not a habitual smoker but he smoked with me the other day, not to mention his drug use after high school.

I know they take a polygraph, but I don't want his chances hurt because of light pot smoking. This close to applying especially.

your friend will not be hired. he will fail the drug screening process and the polygraph. if he tells the truth on the polygraph he will be disqualified for recent drug abuse. your friend needs to decide between illegal narcotics and a career in law enforcement. for right now it seems very clear what his priorities are.

This is an oxymoron. Your friend wants to enforce the law as a policeman but also wants to be above the law as an illegal drug user. Your friend should not try to be in constant conflict with himself. Your friend needs to choose---does he want to be a law breaker and a drug user then he should find employment that fits that scenario----does he want to be a policeman then he should make life choices that fit within those parameters.
Police are responsible for the safety of others and frequently have to make split second judgment calls. As part of the public depending on the clear heads and fast reactions of our crucial police departments, I do not want a pot head carrying a gun and and making decisions about me or my loved ones.

it depends on the department. Look up the department's website and find the employment section. Check out the conditions of employment. Most allow the use of Marijuana as long as it's not recent, say not within the last two years. the fact that your friend is a current marijuana smoker is going to keep him from getting the gig.

If your friend continues to smoke pot, he/she continues to break the law. Anybody who actively breaks the law and/or continues to associate with lawbreakers, is a lousy candidate for police work. I'm no expert on the police selection process, but I know that these behaviors would disqualify an individual in the departments I know about.
