I think most of them are Mac compatible. I haven't bought a camcorder for years, but the digital one from JVC that I bought is fully compatible with the Mac iMovie and still works after 5 years. It uses miniDV tapes. If I were you, I'd look at the ones that Apple recommends for use with iMovie.

Any new camcorder with a firewire jack should work with a Mac. Your best bet is a MiniDV compatable camera.

Most any one that uses mini dv or hdv with a firewire port, sonys and canons are pretty good.
Stay far away from micro dv, dvd and vhs, they are a hassle to import to iMovie.
If you have any analog videos you might want to edit or burn onto a DVD, get a mini dv camcorder that supports analog to digital pass through.
If I could afford it, I would go for the Sony DCR-HC 96.
