Mixture according to the US military statistics:

Protestant Christian make up 35%
Non denominational Christians 11%
Catholic and Orthodox Combined 22%
Atheist 21%
the other 10% is Jewish/Hindu/Muslim

Catholics and Orthodox were combined as one religion because of the common just war theory which makes them almost 50% less likely to join the military then other religion aside from the pacifist (Quakers, Mennonites, Buddhist).

Interesting to note all religions except Catholic/Orthodox represent a higher percentage of military population then they do in civilian population

There are probably thousands of them. They are doing good work, and when called to do so, they will perform their duties, up to and including, shooting at the enemy.

Although you didn't say it, the implication hangs in the air; there is nothing wrong with a soldier who is also Christian. Jesus met with a Centurion (a Roman commander of one hundred troops) and healed his servant, and even proclaimed that this Roman had more faith than anyone he'd seen in all of Israel. (See Matthew 8 & Luke 7)

Another example is where John the Baptist was asked by soldiers what they were to do. John replied, "Never extort money from anyone by threats or blackmail, and be satisfied with your pay." (Luke 3:14)

Never did either of these tell them, "Resign from the military."

Catholics are Christians. I am a veteran of the US Navy and I can tell you that there are a large portion of the American service members of various religions and I believe nearly every type of belief, including polytheism, atheist, and agnosticism is represented by members of the American military. Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists are also very common in the military. Everybody is represented there. Commanding officers do not check religious affiliations when giving orders

My son is a Christian in Iraq. So far all he has shot was a car engine.

Does anyone know the religion of the terrorists and vigilantes in Iraq who are shooting, suicide bombing, etc. and killing the people of Iraq in huge numbers everyday?

All the American soldiers fighting in Iraq have embossed on their dogtags their religious affiliation. Only a small percentage have been, and will continue to follow their beliefs as they would elsewhere.

Catholics are Christians too.
