My 10-month-old pit bull puppy just recently lost his playmate and ever since he has been following everyone in the house around and whining when we walk away or don’t pet him. We don’t know if he’s suffering from separation anxiety or just being a big baby.

Yes all animals can have separation anxiety, For example Owner moving away. or new pets moving in. Any sudden new environment, can cause this. Know more then a child going to a new school, To help this transaction for his lose. give him some more attention by petting him more or taking him for walks or rides in the car. Anything that can take he's mind off his lost. Also remove any thing that can remind him of his playmate (toys beds or rearrange his routine might help him fill better. If his appetite does'nt get better with in a weeks time there maybe some else wrong with him. This will take time .so be patience, Also keep watching his behavoir in case he's in any phycial pain .Good luck

I'm in the same boat. I also have a 10 week old puppy. He stays in the woods behind our house, because hes so scared to come out. I think he has separation anxiety. I'm not really sure what to do, I just try really hard to let him know that I don't want to hurt him. Sorry I couldn't help.

I recently lost two of my cats, the first one (Rover) was put down because it was his time to go, he was very old and we just didn't want him to suffer. Well my other cat (Annie) became very depressed and quit eating because of it. Sadly, we didn't notice until too late because I have another cat (Durby) so I couldn't really watch their eating habits. So what I'm saying is yes, it is possible that your dog could become depressed and suffer from seperation anxiety. I did some research on cat depression which I suppose isn't very different from dog depression and from it I learned that spending more time than usual with your animal and just loving it will help him through it all. Also I would suggest watching his eating habits.

Animals can have separation anxiety from other animals or from humans. One of my friend's dogs has separation anxiety towards her and has to be in a doggy airline crate when she isn't home.

In this case it sounds like your puppy is depressed and upset and misses his play pal. If his pal passed on to the great green yonder, than he is mourning and lamenting for them. This is normal, but try to engage him as much as possible and consider getting a replacement pal for him. Some animals are one household animals and others need play pals to be happy. Make sure to watch out for symptoms of mourning heartbreak as I call it: he won't eat, he won't play, he's lethargic. Yes, an animal can actually pass on from missing its human or playmate. Just like humans do.

Good luck with your situation and generally animals aren't ever "big babies." They usually complain when something is wrong.
