I've been a non-believer most of life, but now with things increasingly taking a turn for the worse, I realize that some source of faith might be more essential that I had initially assumed.

Read John 17:3 This is the most important start of getting to know God and His Son. To study scripture is the first thing that gives you hope that there is a God and that the Bible is his word? At 2 Tim 3:16 it says all scripture is inspired of God and can and should be used to make matters straight.
An Example: many people say the prayer at Mathew 6:9,10 but don't take the time to discern its meaning? Look at Dan 2:44 and Revelation 21:3,4 Is this not what the prayer is asking for?
A question does the soul live on? Look at Eccl3:19, Eccl 9:5,10 and see if you agree ?
Or look at Mathew 5:5 and then read Psalms 37:9-11,29

If you have questions ask for direction and see if the Bible can provide you with the answers? gemhandy@hotmail.com

That is soo wonderful that you ask maggot-boy.
Well go to someone you know who is a Christian or go to your local Pastor, and ask them to help you with this life changing decision.
Any Christian would be delighted to take you through.
I have read through what other people have said & I recomend the above answers of these people for understanding. I am no judge, God forgive, though Christian minds think alike & God has given us the Spirit of discernment.
1 John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Find a Christian friend to converse with. Try to pick someone patient and wise. Know that some "believers" will push you away from God, but don't be discouraged. Remember that God and His people are two different beings. Not everyone who claims to follow Him really does. For help overcoming the intellectual hurdles that may fall in the way of faith, check out books by C.S. Lewis and N.T. Wright. Explore the Bible, I recommend starting with the book of Mark. If and when you are comfortable, seek out a local Christian church. If you have any Christian friends, ask them to go with you. Here, you should find more answers.

You build a relationship with God the same way you do with a friend. You spend time with Him, you learn of Him through the Scriptures, talk with Him through prayer.

The more time you spend the more you get to know His ways and thoughts. His will for you will be revealed also.

Since you seem to be searching, ask God to forgive you for your wayward ways and disobedience, ask Him to come into your life. Believe and trust with all your heart and mind that He is the Living Savior and that He loves you. You don't have to love Him first.

He will seal you with the Holy Spirit, who will guide you into the truth to help you understand the Scriptures.

Many people try to reach God through intellectualizing but the Bible is the Gospel, the good news and it is a spiritual book for spiritual people. You have to receive it in the spirit because if you are carnal-minded (what I see, feel, taste, sense & touch), you will not find God and it probably will not make much sense to you.

I would start with the book of John.

May God give you wisdom and understanding and bring peace upon you, in the name of Jesus

Read the Bible (find a translation you can understand easily) and participate in a study group if possible. You will be with other people wanting to know more about building a relationship with God. Also, surround yourself with believers and establish relationships with them.

There are some great books out there, too. Two of my favorite authors are John Ortberg and Philip Yancy.

Most importantly get to know Jesus. God sent him to bridge the gap in our relationship with him.

First of all a relationship with God is only possible through His Son Jesus- Sin has separated us from Him- but God loved us so much that He gave His only Son so that all who believe will have everlasting life- Christ is the foundation of our building relationship with God- You must admit that you are a sinner- then ask Christ to forgive you of your sin- repent- which is turn away from sin and accept Christ as your Savior and Lord- after you do this- spend time with Him in His word and prayer everyday. If you have a personal relationship with Christ you will want to spend time with Him - that is the only way you will grow in your faith. He will meet you right where you are- He is waiting for you- Your question is part of the way that God seeks you. He is seeking you my friend- reach out to Him through Christ. Trust Him with your life- He loved you enough to die so that you can live. If you want to email me feel free.

Start talking to Him like you would a close friend or confidant. Jesus will lead you to a house of worship where you can get to know Him better. Start reading the Bible in the New Testament with an easy to read version such as The Message Bible.

See if there is an International House of Prayer in your area and go there. They are not connected to any one church and you can meet believers there who are sincere about God and can tell you about good churches in your area.

I'm thankful that you see your need for God. This realization has come to you from God Himself. Faith doesn't come to any of us easily or automatically, any more than a garden or orchard grows easily and without careful attention and hard work.

But God's plan is for us to grow in our faith, and not be stuck in the same spiritual rut all our lives. Jesus Christ came into the world so our sins could be forgiven and we could go to Heaven. But He also has a plan for us right now: to grow in our faith and in our relationship to Him.

How does this happen? The Bible says, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation" (1 Peter 2:2). Just as a baby will never grow unless he or she is given nourishing milk, so you and I need spiritual "milk" to nourish and strengthen our souls. If we neglect the spiritual "milk" God offers us, our spiritual lives will be weak.

What is this "milk"? First, God has given us His Word, the Bible. Make the Bible part of your life every day. Even setting aside five minutes at first to read through one of the Gospels or Psalms will help you to grow spiritually.

God has also given us other believers to encourage and help us. We aren't meant to be spiritually isolated; we need the church, and we need other believers. Finally, God has given us the privilege of prayer. Make each of these part of your daily life, and you will grow spiritually strong.

Study God's Word.
find a religious teacher that you are comfortable with and attend a church that teaches Christianacy.

If may take going to a few churches before you find the one church that you believe in most.
one size does not fit all!
Pray every day at A.M. and P.M. that God's plan of salvation will become known to you...it won't be hard when the Holy Spirit talks to you..

as you believe so shall you receive

The New Testament is the shortest route for me. You just get a good translation, The Living Bible because it has good thick pages to highlight, and whether you absorb every word or not, it works like magic. People always tell me not to use the word magic, but it is. It works some kind of presence into your life and heart. The book is magic. And I don't need to be told what word to use either because I don't care for organized religion or going to church to hear a preacher's slant on things. I am intelligent and I take care of my relationship with the Holy Spirit myself.
