You are doing some shopping online, and find something that you realy wnat, but there is no price to be found. You e-mail the seller asking the price and she replies:
"Suppose you have two numbers. The difference of the two numbers is 12. The product of the two numbers is 17. Multiply the larger of the two numbers by 100, add 50 times the smaller number to that, round the total to the nearest whole number, and that's my price."

What is the price that she wants?

If you could, please walk me through it, so that I can see where you got your answer.

Even though 17 is prime, it doesn't mean that it can't be the product of two real numbers. The initial data gives : x * y =17 and x - y=12. From the second equation we see that x=12 + y which gives by substitution into the first equation y(12 + y)=17 This becomes the quadratic y² +12y - 17 = 0. Solving gives the numbers (just to three places) 1.280 and 13.280 which achieve the requisite answers of product of 17 and difference of 12. Complete the further computations : (13.28 * 100) + (50 * 1.28) = 1328 + 64 = 1392 - voila! your answer

Nope, impossible, 17 is a prime number, so it cannot be the product of two numbers, well, unless it was 17 and 1, but 17-1 does not equal 12 though

simple

13.28 - 1.28 = 12
13.28 * 1.28 = 16.998 4

monetary values round to 2 decimals so 8 rounds 16.9984 up to 17.00

13.28 *100 = 1,328
50 * 1.28 = 64

1,328 + 64 which is $1,392.00

Not possible. 17 is a prime number, meaning no numbers will multiply into it.

I would be saying to the seller "Do you want to sell the Damn item or don't you?"....
I wouldn't be doing all that maths just to find out the price!!! Too much hard work!!! Forget the item!

(yes, I realise its a riddle...just don't like maths!)

Pay no more than $19.99, and ask a sensible question in future.
