I have come to find out that the following description is extremely common, especially among young men:

Right before he falls asleep, a heavy force overcomes the young man. He lays there not being able to move or even speak, as if he is completely paralyzed. He is overcome with a sense of doom and immediately recognizes the force that is holding him down is not normal and with every ounce of strength, attempts to pray. Then as suddenly as it began, the force is gone and the young man is gasping for air, and now able to move.

This is a general description and each person has minor variations, but I now know several young men (including myself) who have had this experience.

What is it? Why is it so common?

this is sleep paralysis
a common condition that can affect up to 40 % of the population at some point
often at times of stress and illness etc
it is accompanied often by something called hypnagogic state , which can bring about waking dreams so to speak
it is caused by the body secreting hormones prior to dream sleep to stop us acting out our dreams
if we wake during this time or it is released too soon , then people will experience things much the same as you described
please dont worry and of course see your GP if it gets too much to handle

In my opinion, this happens because some one is going to be a very good and helpful person one day or that they are close to finding something out that a spirit does not want them to find out. I know that some people think that this is hog wash, but I am married and my husbnad still is iffy about spirits. Every so often a spirit messes with him at night. Including holding him down and not letting him move. I my self experienced a similar event. I was in bed one night and felt something behind me. I was frozen where I lay and until it went away could not talk breathe or move. I know for a fact that it was evil and if I did move that I woudl see something that would not go over well with me. And I have had a ghostly lion roar in my ear when I wasn't even in my teenage years yet. Just remember that when this happens that you are either onto soemthing or are going to be very useful to the good spirits some time.

This happens not only to young men, I've experienced this since i was 12,and i do have 2 brothers who also do this upon occasion.we also have a family history of sleep apnea.
for many years i was terrified of these episodes and would try to struggle which made it worse.being conscious or at least aware of my surroundings i began to do what you said .pray. and I force my mind to relax .kind of a lucid dream control thing.and the paralysis would lift.I even began to recognize before hand when it was coming on.And praying before falling asleep helps.( I plead the blood of Jesus for protection .)
I would suggest seeing a doctor about a possible sleep disorder such as apnea to be on the safe side.

It's not at all uncommon and it's called 'sleep paralysis'. There may be a more clinical term but the layterm describes it so accurately.

What's happening is that basically the conscious mind wakes up and is aware but the body is still asleep. Sometimes one can open their eyes and be awake but still paralyzed and other times, the entire body is asleep and the eyes remain closed but the person is awake. It generally only lasts a few seconds, and prayer is not responsible for it's cessation.

It's just different parts of your brain going to sleep before others creating this scary phenomenon that is disturbing because you feel out of control.
