I heard millions of Irish people died, because the potato crop failed. Are Irish people still dying because they can't grow potatos ?

:) most Irish people have moved beyond subsistance farming by this stage. We even have cars now.
That happened at a time of extreme poverty in Ireland, where social aspects also had a major part to play in the famine, with a system of serfdom making it difficult for the peasants to do much more than scrape together enough food to eat. They certainly had not enough to store, adn this is why the failure of the potato crop had such a devastating effect.

According to some sources i just read, no, because of their soil.
Potatoes grow best in cooler temperatures (50-70 degrees F), deep, loose, well-drained, moisture retentive loam, and with adequate irrigation. Most potato varieties are adaptable, aggressive rooters, fortunately, and will produce quite respectably in less than perfect conditions. Their genetic variability is substantial. yes we do grow potatoes and no, nobody is dying from lack of potatoes :)
