I am doing a weight loss challenge with some people at work to see who can lose the most weight in 6 weeks. I am torn on what kind of diet, calories, etc. I should follow and how much I should work out. I am 5'7' and 220 lbs right now. I would love to lose some weight but I see nothing but conflicting information on how many calories I should eat and how much I should work out. Anyone have any suggestions?

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

The bottom line is, to lose weight, you have to burn more calories then you take in. To be exact, to lose one US pound, you have to burn off 3500 calories more then you take in. The best way to do this is to reduce your calorie intake and get a moderate amount of exercise. Doctors say that no one should ever dip below about 1200 calories a day. If you want to lose about a pound a week, just eat 500 calories less every day, and without changing your exercising habits you will drop weight. If you want to lose even more weight, exercise as well.
