If the plane ticket is made under my maiden name and my passport still has my maiden name, how will anyone know that is no longer my legal name?

you should carry the marriage license with you if indeed you have changed your name. once you have returned, you can apply for a new passport with your new name and fees waived
(DS 5504). check with this link for further questions:

Yes you can. Here in our country, married women have the option to use their maiden names in applying for a passport. If you prefer to use your maiden name, you will not be required to present an authenticated marriage certificate. As long as you still have some identification cards to show bearing your maiden name, that would be fine.

You shoudl be ok if your license is under your maiden name. If not.. carry a copy of your marrige license with you. When my friend got married last September, she carried her marriage license with her that proved she had changed her name.. but not legally yet. If your license is changed and you have time... file for a passport renewal.. and call the airlines and explain to them your predicament... they will tell you what to do.. good luck!

You will be fine. But, technically, it is illegal. And if you are going to do it, make sure you also fill out the customs forms with your maiden name.
