I'm 5'4" and 200 pounds and out of shape so I'm sure that has something to do with it but I'm walking in an effort to lose the weight. I do know that it is not shin splints as I've had this confirmed by a doctor. I have no idea had to stretch this area of the body. Any suggestions? Please help me! I really want to get in shape and be healthy and not out of breath all the time.

This could most likely be a type of stress fracture which is often times confused with shin splints. People often mis-diagnose lower leg soreness as shin splints. It is not caused by the walking that you are doing, but rather the impact of your feet striking the ground. Things that may help could be to change the type of surface that you are walking on (softer surface i.e. a track), be sure to have proper fitting shoes, and don't overload yourself. It is very important to stretch the muscles before begining your exercise regiment and to properly rest afterwards. Use the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation) Try the following link for some helpful stretches. http://exercise.about.com/cs/flexibility/l/blstretch.htm

I had that problem last year... If you are walking on pavement.. it can be hard on your knees and shins. Make sure you are using a good pair of tennis shoes... and make sure you stretch before you go. I used to put my left leg on the top of a step.. then put my right foot off the step and step down.. so your toes are still on the step but your heel is pushing down and its stretching the back of your leg.. then i would do it for the other leg. also.. if you grab your left foot with your left arm and pull towards your butt... you can stretch out the front of your leg. If you can get into a gym.. the elliptical machines are awesome for people with leg problems.. because they dont cause so much impact on your knees... good luck.. the pain will go away soon...

they are probably shin splints...its where pieces of the front of your shins(the bone)..actually splinters off into the muscle...i would get a second opinion...there is very little muscle or anything else on the front of your shins to cause this type of pain..
