There are a lot of accents in Scotland alone, depending on the area. The Aberdeenshire area for example has about 6 or more different accents depending on if you're living in the country, a town, a village or in Aberdeen itself.
The Fraserburgh accent for example, where I live close to, is a fast accent while in Aberdeen it's a slightly slower accent. In the Turiff area it's a very thick accent and can be a little hard to understand.
Though my own accent is altered by choice due to Americans who used to live in a village a couple of miles away, they couldn't understand a word of Scottish, so I learned how to adapt my own accent into a plain, unremarkable accent so that I could translate. Now I can easily switch between various accents and even mix accents, quite easy to do.
The different Scottish accents can be reasonably easy to understand, not all of them, but the majority of them. It all depends on the area really and how well you're listening.
Tony.

I'm a Scottish girl lol - it depends on the area the person is from! Like England, there are different Scottish regional accents. A neddish (chav) accent is very nasal and a horrible accent! Up north, there are some nice accents.

Just to clear up a few things for you stupid americans
1. Scots ARE NOT ALL GINGER
2. Scots DO NOT ALL PLAY THE BAGPIPES, in fact i don't know anyone who does
3. Scots men wear jeans, NOT KILTS every day
4. Scots do not HUNT HAGGIS, it's made out of sheeps insides
I'm from Aberdeen, and I must admit I like the scottish accent
PS if you cant understand Scots, why visit Scotland?!? rather than coming here and winging. I wouldn't do to japan, cause i can't understand them! Its not that hard to work out
