He barks and nips a lot and doesn't stop when told. He jumps up on people particularly the kids (I guess it's easier to knock them down and they get irritated by it so it fuels him more). He is part shepard and part blue heeler but I think he's got more of the shepard temperment. He is a year and a half old.

I have had and do have many shepherds and the males especially are good around children and not so hyper; and none of the males or females nip. That is something that should have been stopped when the dog was a very young pup.

Obedience training: I ahve a female boxer who is a bundle of energy but listens very well due to obedience traing, some (like her) will not listen with a regular collar or choker for that matter so the use of a pinch collar might be needed (doesn't hurt them, actually better for the alignment of the vertebrate in their necks than chokers or regular collars when tugged on by a leash) and once they figure out that they are not in control is when the unwanted behavior stops, also obedience training isn't for the dog but for the owner to teach the dog the rules .

Here is my theory on negetive reinforcement and most trainers say the same thing, it doesn't work and its cruel, dogs do what ever they can to please you and negetive reinforcement confuses them and they don't know why they are being scolded, so positive reinforcement and patience is the way to go.

I disagree with using a rolled up newspaper! Positive reinforcement... ie.. treats and praise for correct behavior, and ignoring and preventing bad behavior tends to work very well. I would suggest that you google, the "Nothing In Life Is Free" technique, and put it into use. Then, get him enrolled in some manners classes at your local dog club. Best thing to do is make sure that he gets plenty of exercise. A tired dog is a good dog! training takes time and patience and work, but in the end it's worth it. Good luck!

The dog has figured out he can bully you. He's going to have to learn that he is NOT the 'alpha' dog.

You may need extra help with him: I suggest obedience training. And in the meanwhile, don't be afraid to use a rolled-up newspaper on him after you tell him 'No!'.

Take him to dog obedience classes. Check with a local Petsmart or your vet for recommendations.
