Wages paid in these stores depends on the store location, the annual sales volume of the store, and the job position.
A store in a large metropolitan area will generally offer higher pay than one in a small market. These stores are competing with every other retailer in an area for good employees. If there is a lot of competition, wages are usually higher. A store in an area with a large number of retirees will also sometimes have to pay higher wages to keep it's younger workers since they may be in short supply.
A store with a high annual sales volume will also tend to offer higher wages since it is in their budget to do so. At the same time, the store managers are under extreme pressure to keep operating expenses as low as possible. Still, they have to compete in the labor market and will usually reward good employees.
There are different rates of pay for different job positions within the store. A lot depends on the experience and specialized knowledge you bring to the table. If you have specialized knowledge in particular areas, you are worth more money. Let's face it, any warm body can wait on customers, but it takes someone with specialized knowledge to answer the questions many customers pose. If you have experience in the plumbing field and work in the plumbing department of one of these stores, you are more likely to earn more money than someone who has no plumbing experience.
In Lake Havasu City, AZ, I'm guessing that a cashier, customer service associate with no particular experience, or some other low level entry level positions might expect as much as $7.50 to $8.00 per hour. Someone with specialized knowledge might expect as much as $10.00 per hour. A department manager may expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $22,000 to $25,000 per year. One of the four assistant store manager positions in these stores might expect $30,000 to $40,000 per year. The store manager might expect $85,000 to over $100,000 per year.
I can tell you from experience that it is possible to move up the ladder very quickly in these stores. Good employees are very hard to find. Make sure your attendance record is perfect, work hard, and learn all you can. You are sure to be noticed, and promoted.
Good luck with your retail career.
