Counting has worked for many stressed individuals. Concentrate on your breathing, try to slow it down. Remind yourself of your choices, everything is a choice: You can let the actions and choices of others effect you or you can take control and make your own choices. The feeling of empowerment helps many people work through their stressful lives and eventually leads to a new outlook, one with less stressors.

I get severly stressed out and suffer from bad anxiety so I have to take Xanax as soon as I feel like I'm getting to stressed. Unfortunately, I have also learned to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol which only contributes to stress in the long run. Anyways, I have heard of tons of things to do for stress that are healthy alternatives to stress! The biggest thing you can do to calm down is to breathe really deep. Exercise, like a vigorous walk, also helps some. I found that playing with my dogs helps tremendously. Get into a good book which will help distract you from whatever is stressing you out. And finally, if you can, walk away from a stressful situation (assuming that you aren't at work and will get fired). I almost get panic attacks sometimes when shopping at a large store like Wal-Mart on a busy day and I will just leave my cart and walk out and come back another day. If you have kids that are stressing you out, see if someone will watch them if they become too much. There are many, many books on dealing with stress and anxiety although I'm not sure which to recommend. Good luck and remember, RELAX!

Go for a power walk, or do some aerobics. The heightened activity will help to balance the body chemistry, and you will calm down.
You may not calm down to the point of being calm, it all depends on what is causing your stress. You could also try writing about what you feel. It doesn't have to make any sense, and you are not writing for anyone to read, you are just pouring your feelings out, which may help you identify what's bothering you.

Sit down and take a few deep breaths. Take one thing at a time. If you have many things to do, then make a list. Start one thing then finish it before you start the next. Try not to worry about things you have no control over.
Laugh. find some funny stories or watch a movie, even hanging out with friends.
Stress is very harmful to your body, so take it easy.
