Yes and no.

If you go back in time and look for that familiar face, then you won't find him. And if, on that same time traveling trip, you stand on the corner of Jerusalem and Vine, and yell out "Jesus!" then no one is going to answer.

And in reliable history books, you're not going to find direct evidence of Jesus' existence.

However, there clearly was a person who inspired the religion of Christianity. Whether he really did miracles, or was a virgin birth, or was resurrected, that's a matter of Faith.

Roman documents support the story of Yeshua (Jesus) being crucified on the Friday before passover appx AD 35.

There is no disputing that the person existed and acted as an itinerant teacher, that he did teach a philosophy of forgiveness and that there were some unusual events when he was present.

Note that according to the legal system of the time, the testimony of 2 witnesses (not necessarily eyewitnesses..)without contradictory evidence was considered positive proof. We have the biblical accounts which in effect are equivalent to today's sworn affidavits (admissible in court at the time they were written) There are no documents which refute them... There are other supporting documents. (unnecessary, but worth mentioning) So it should be considered a fact that Jesus was an actual person.

There are Jewish documents, contemporary to the time the New Testament documents were written, that attempt to refute his performing miracles.... but none that attempt to refute that he existed. Thus, there is the ability to argue about if he could do miracles or not.

So, there's no doubt that Jesus was a real person.

Genghis Khan was a great leader. He conquered more of Asia and Europe than the Romans did. We know this because of what is written in the history books.
Jesus was a man, who was said to do marvelous things. We know this because of what is written in the Bible.

Did Khan really exist? All we know is what is written about him. That's it. No actual evidence has been found that he really lived. Only stories. No tomb has ever been found of Khan.

The same thing is said of Jesus.

So, maybe they are both made up. Maybe they were both real. Maybe Khan was the real Messiah. Maybe Jesus was a nut job who thought he was the son of God and convinced enough people that they actually started to believe it.
Who's to say?

The name Jesus was actually not uncommon either at that time or in later history. Most of the history of that time comes down to us in unwritten form except for religious writings, scrolls, and an occasional stone tablet. More and more scientists are attempting to prove or disprove these ancient histories, whether it be the existence of Atlantis or the Story of Jesus.

Someday we may have concrete proof one way or the other, but for now its truth is as it has been, a personal choice based on nonempirical knowledge (faith). The story itself is based on writings by several men which themselves sometimes conflict as to the exact details. With all these negatives it would seem impossible to ever have empirical proof of his existence, but millions of people, myself included, do beleive it to be true.

There are too few stories in history of men and women that strived to set an example for the rest of us follow to make the world a better place. It is perhaps human nature that the horrific makes the headlines and the inspiring goes unreported.

There is no reliable evidence that Jesus Christ, the man, ever existed.

The Bible's account of Christ has never been independently verfied. You will have answers here that refer you to an ancient writer named Jesephus and others. Unfortunately, scholars have long known that the portions of Josephus's writing that refer to Jesus were forgeries added much later. All subsequent "historical" writings about Christ were based on those forgeries.

You will also have people using Bible verses as "proof." I'm sure you understand why that's laughable. That's like me writing a story about a flying carpet, saying it is true, and when asked to prove it saying that "it's true because it's in my story."

You should also Google "Mithras" and "Dionysus," ancient gods whose myths match those of Christ with astonishing accuracy. We're talking being born on December 25, three wise men, shepherds, the star, walking on water, the crucifixion, all of it.

None of this proves that the story of Christ is a fictional one. He could have been a real person in spite of all this. But there is a lot of evidence suggesting that it's a myth. Remember, the religion of yesterday is the myth of today.

but foolishness to the unbelievers

as you believe so shall you receive

In historical communities the existance of a man named Jesus is not usually debated. Even some of the details of the bible are pretty historically sound. We don't talk too much about theology, though, so some of the stuff just isn't considered.

He's made up Just like the other 90% of ther bible. What about the "missing years" of Jesus life? They make a big issue of him being born. But nothing is written of him as a child or teen ?

It was in the ancient history book I used to teach sixth graders, along with Muhammed, and whoever started the Buddhist faith. (sorry, can't remember). Of course, I taught at a Catholic school.

Yes, Jesus indeed did exist, and He still does. The New Testament of the Bible contains the story of His Life, and His teachings.
