because they are scary

Because they are loud, scary and crazy occurences that also affect the dogs in ways we humans cant feel, electrical fields barometric pressure etc all of that information at once is like a sensory overload. My male dog is also terrified of storms, just make sure not to feed their insecurity.. just ignore their fear and go about your business.

Well this is a scientific fact actually. Most pets do not like too much of noise and distraction. They like a peaceful and quiet life. This is not an abnormal situation. Most dogs are scared of storms because they dont like the hoarse and rough noise of thunder that occurs. Or maybe the flash of lightning that appears, is to bright and its sudden bright appearance scares a dog.

i'm not sure for the reason behind it, but i have a few theories. my jack russell is terrified of storms, and i think it could be because a dogs' hearing is four times louder than a humans. so, if you think about what a storm sounds like to you, then imagine it four times louder, it's going to be pretty scary.
also, the randomness of thunderclaps adds to the scariness of storms for a dog, as they are hearing very loud bangs every so often, at random times.

well a lot of animals r afraid of thunderstorms. But there probably not afraid there probably just kind of nervous or interested. If u want ur dog 2 be away when theres a thunderstorm play with it or distract it so it won't be so anxious about the storm!
hope i helped!

Some dogs are like that. My grandparents used to have to chain their Saint Bernard before storms because if they didn't, he would try to break down the door to get inside. And my parents have to make sure their lab is crated and that another one of the dogs is safely indoors.

If you don't fuss over your dog and act like the storm is no big deal, he will eventually take his cue from you and settle down.

Good luck!

pretty much all dogs (and a lot of animals) are afraid of storms. my sheltie, also a male, always gets really hot when he senses a storm and he is whimpering at me all the time when there is one, and oddly he wants to go OUTSIDE. yeah hes afriad of them too, when he hears thunder he jumps on top of my, or he goes in the basement, which is pretty smart of him. most dogs are afraid of the thunder, and a lot of other dogs, like mine could sence the storm (through humidity, wind ect) animals are smart.

If you want to cure it, I've heard you can play recordings of storms to him softly then gradually get louder so it'll be used to the random noises. Music might work too.

Because he has genetically weak nerves. You may be able to help him get over that fear, but, it will manisest in other ways at other times because it is a genetic problem. Dogs like that need to be watched carefully because you do not know what the trigger for his next insecurity or fear will be and how he will react to it.
