in the winter time, push the button up. it will pull the heat up and spread it around. in the summer time, push the button down, it will circulate the air down and around

The direction can be determined by the lowest part of the blade. It should turn in a way that the lowest part of the blade is turning in this direction. This picks up the cooler air from below and spreads it across the ceiling and it falls back down into the room. In the winter, it is the opposite because you want to "pull" the warm air down from the ceiling to circulate it throughout the room.

typical is to set the fan to blow down in summer and up in winter.

blowing down you are more likely to feel the breeze.

circulating the air in winter prevents the heat from concentrating at the ceiling. that helps keep the heating bill from being as high.

You want the fan to turn in the summer so that it pulls air upward.
