This topic can be really confusing to people. But I can tell you that just about everything you see on tv commercials is all hype and marketing.

It always makes me laugh when Oral B, Crest, etc... make it sound like dentists spend so much time worrying about the best toothbrush design. It's very misleading. The truth is that in all the thousands of hours of lectures I sat through in dental school, less than 1 hour was devoted to this topic. I can sum up all you need to know right here.

TOOTHBRUSHES: Use a soft bristled toothbrush. Not medium and especially not hard. It doesn't take much pressure to get the plaque off your teeth. The medium or hard bristles can cause gum recession and notch your teeth after several years of use.

ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES: These can be good especially if you have arthritis or some other problem that makes it difficult for you to brush. But for the average person they have no real advantage. Some people like the electric brushes and that is fine. I use a fancy Oral B electric myself but only because the rep gave it to me free. The important thing is that you get a toothbrush and USE it twice a day.

FLOSS: Don't forget this part of your routine. Even the best toothbrush can't get between your teeth. This is the number one place I find cavities in my patients. Waxed, unwaxed, flavored... it doesn't matter as long as you will use it.

Hope that helps clear up some confusion for you.

They are all pretty good. Don't let the packages fool you. You look at them and each one has some diagram of teeth and how the unique design of the toothbrush removes plaque. How each bristle works perfectly to get the places other toothbrushes miss. However, it is all the same. The toothbrush is actually very simple and if it has bristles and you move it up and down, your teeth will be cleaned.
