I really don't think most people who say they are "possessed" are actually possessed. I think they're just doing it because they can, or because they have some kind of mental disorder or something traumatic happened to them.

Because they have some sort of mental illness, there's no such thing as possession. Although over the history many conditions have caused people to be called possessed. Looking through accounts of various "possessions" many doctors conclude that many were schizophrenic, some were probably deeply autistic, and in some cases it may have been something as simple as epilepsy. Unfortunately with little or no medical knowledge these people lived lives where they were either shunned,or if unfortunate enough to be born into some superstitious society they ended up being labeled possessed and horrible things done to the in an attempt to exorcize them. Can you imagine suffering from some horrid mental illness and those around you are attacking you essentially? It had to be horrible, good thing few would face that sort of thing today.

They don't. Schizophrenia, hallucinatory paranoia, and other mental illnesses are mistaken for "possession", even today. When people take the victims to "exorcists", sometimes the subject is doubly victimized: Abused, starved, and once in awhile dying from maltreatment.

I have yet to hear of a single, verifiable case of possession or exorcism. I'm sure there are lots and lots of tales out there, but how many of them can be verified by an objective researcher?

The Gospel accounts give many examples of people who were demon possessed, but the Bible doesn't give us a clear explanation as to how one becomes possessed. In my study and ministry I have concluded that when someone who has not trusted the Lord Jesus as her personal Savior she is open to any and all attacks of the devil and his demons.
Satan certainly is active today—and he always has been active, because his goal has always been to block God's work. Whenever God is at work, you can be sure Satan also will be at work, counterattacking and trying to stop whatever God is doing.

The Bible doesn't go into great detail about Satan and how he works; after all, our focus should be on God, not Satan. (If we concentrate mainly on Satan we'll become either overly-fearful or overly-fascinated—and both are wrong.) But the Bible does tell us that the devil has a multitude of demons under his authority, just as God has the angelic hosts under His control to do His will.

Never forget two important truths about Satan (whose name means "Adversary"). First, he is real, and he will do everything he can to draw us away from Christ. Yes, he tempts us to do wrong—but most of all, he tempts us to turn away from God. The Bible says, "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

Second, Satan is a defeated foe! By His death and resurrection Jesus Christ conquered Satan, and some day God will say, "Depart from me ... into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41). On whose side are you—Satan's or Christ's? Make sure of your salvation by giving your life to Christ today.

I think there are many reasons, but perhaps the most important is to show the glory and strength of the Lord. ( Although I think some of them are just for show) There are cases that have shown true instances of an evil influence that has taken over a person's whole personality.

The biggest reason per Father Gabriel Amorth, the leading excorist in the world is cursing someone. Such as a disgruntled business partner saying "I curse you and your family!" (and that family losing their business, deaths, etc) or a parent saying "Go to hell, kid!". This is demonstrated by an excorism that occurred in the late 1930's in Iowa. This excorism last approximately 7 weeks. The girl who was possessed was very devout, loved God. Her father through many attempts to rape her and being unable to do so, cursed her to hell and all its demons. Then her father then died. This possession was noticed later after she was found to have strange things occur. During the excorism it was found that her father was one of the demons that possessed her, to torment her. The girl was already possessed at the time of her father's death, but according to the testimony the father requested Lucifer to enter into his child. Sick, truly. http://www.olrl.org/stories/bgonsatn/

These curses are very real and each of us must be very careful what we say! The signs and the effects can be damaging.

Like the poster above me stated, usually there is evidence of occult activity that produces possession. Anything can be possessed. The demons of hell do not care where as long as they don't get to hang out in hell...anything but there. Why? Obviously it's crappy place to be in hell and demons have been known to beg excorists to cast them anywhere BUT hell...but by the command of Jesus they must go where the excorcist says...which is back where they came from.

Other ways to be possessed is through permission from God. To show the power of God, to give glory to Him where it belongs. One story is in the is regarding a child, Nicola Aubry, in the mid 1500's. God allowed this child to be possessed to show the world His power and grace and that indeed the Eucharist is the Real Presence of Christ. http://www.olrl.org/stories/exorcism.shtml

The great triumph of Satan is the ability to have people in this world not believe in him, hell or possession. Indeed many so-called possession ARE psychological, which is why there is a way to go about this. You don't normally just show up to any priest and your have an excorism, it takes many months, years to be assured that this isn't a mental illness.

I don't think possession in the true sense of an evil spirit overtaking someone happens all that often. We have free will and can reject these grounded spirits if we want....but for some reason, whether environmental, social, or spiritually we allow these things to happen. I also think that "possession" is not just an evil spirit, but can be due to someone being overcome by greed or other....

The holy ghost possesses some people and the only way you can cure them of it is to call an exorcist to free them of it's influence and they will get control of their minds back again then.
