I've worked in police civilian roles since 1996 and have had a good taste for it. Because of this I wanted to try out being on the other side. The job is filled with a lot of boring stuff such as standing on crimes scenes in the freezing cold/wet weather for 8-10 hours during day or night. There is a lot of paperwork which means that 5 minutes of excitement is followed by 5 hours of paperwork, interviews, taking statements and any other more tedious but necessary tasks.
Having said that the reason I like it so much is the scope. There are so many areas that you can go into and specialise in - traffic, CID, major crime, child abuse units, domestic violence units, air support, dogs, firearms, public order, other office based roles and if you live in a major city there is even more than this.
The team atmosphere (if you have a good team) is well worth it. Having said that if you have a bad team it can really bring you down and make you not want to do the job - I have experienced both sides.
If you are considering joining you should ask your local police if you could go out with them for a shift - make it a late turn as it is more likely to be busy. Then you can get a taste for it and ask lots of questions.

There are quite a few Mrs. Police out there as well!
I enjoyed working with the public and I was looking for a stable, good paying job. My favourite part of the job happens when I see that my intervention in someone's life has made a posistive difference. My other favourite part is when I unload my firearm and put away until next shift and go home safely. Everything I do at work is geared to make sure that moment happens every shift.
There are quite a few fun bits, but it is a job. The people you work with are what make it fun. There is a real feeling of belonging to a "brotherhood" so-to-speak. Everyone you work with is willing to put their life on the line for you.

I could answer with the all time favorite.."I like to help people", but that's common knowledge....I became a cop because of the influences from other cops when I was growing up..secondly my favorite part of the job is the freedom I have, I'm not stuck in an office and i'm always outdoors and most of all...everyday I'll probably see something that i've never seen before

(1) I became a police officer because I like to help people & of the personal rewards I get from the job such as people who are good sometimes find themselves in surcomstances that aren't so good! Helping them through that part of their lives is super rewarding to me. Plus remerbering your number one responsibility is to serve the public! (2) Getting a criminal off the streets so the public doesn't have to put up with it hopefully for one night! (3) Yes it is fun sometimes!
