Taking care of how you look is not an excuse for him not to like you anymore. Maybe there are other reasons why he had a change of heart towards you. He should feel very lucky by what you are doing to yourself. Try to talk to him and ask him the reasons. If he doesn't have any, except that of how you look. Then you're better off without him.

There are two questions here. First, I would not want her "to work on her appearance more" just for my sake. If it were for her work, and social engagements, that is fine. The reason why I liked her in the first place was "the messy bun" and casual clothes.
I do not think he would "stop liking you because by changing your appearance you changed your personality." There maybe a good chance he is attracted to another girl, who he feels has a more suitable personality. Men also judge on personality. If this is the case, it sounds like he is missing out on a diamond for a sapphire.

OK, this is a lot like I get sometimes. I have a good mixture of nice and crappy clothes. In my crap clothes, I seem to get a lot of looks from girls, but in nice clothes, next to nothing. Though looks only come from really hot girls.
I asked my friend (who is a girl) about this and she said a girl won't focus on you if she thinks you're out of her league. Now that I think about that, I don't often look at girls that are out of my league. It's kind of a "who would Ibe best with" thing.
short answer, he probably is intimidated. Make YOUR move!

Sometimes it is hard to tell what someone else is thinking, esp. someone of the opposite sex. If you really like him still try talking to him and find out why he dumped you in the first place. It could be that he was intimidated or he thought you were changing your appearance for another man.

It's probably a mix between your personality changing with you now having more confidence in yourself and caring for your appearances more gives you more self worth in a sense...and also he is also a little intimidated w/ the 'new you'

More likely, he got intimidated... Most men with little confidence and experience give up when they find the one they like climbing the social ladder farther up( or something like that).
If the guy is already close to you when you changed your appearance to the better, he'll like you more.
If you are not that much close, he'll be intimidated.
Some give up after seeing other men start chasing after the girl that "changed".

Well... maybe he was used to seeing you in your regular way. You should ask him in a nice way why he broke up with you. You can still try to win his heart back! =) I've had the same experince too... I dated the most beautiful girl in
Middle school..... but she dumped me for a " Bad Boy". And i'm the one who treats her with respect!!! Oh well... I'm only 12, just take my advice, I've helped almost all of my Adult friends with relationship problems like yours. If he still likes you, do somthing nice for him like, say "Hi" in a nice tone, he looks troubled ask him " You need help?". Just take my advice, it really works. Belive me, it worked for my Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Friends, and People who needed help. So, that's my advice =) good luck =)
From a cute, good gutarist, and relationship wise 12 year old, Al G.

Why did you try to make yourself look better? Maybe he liked you cause your not one of the girls who pays attention to only their hair and clothes... Boys like that you know and so just go back to your old self you will see how things will work out.

My guess is, that since you have made yourself look so much better, he is now intimated. He doen't know if he is "good enough" for you anymore. If you want to be with him, you will have to tell him, somehow, that you do like the guy, but you also intend to be as nicelooking as you can be. And, you can accept him just as he is - - so he should do the same.
