If Mo said you could lie and pretend you are non Muslim to save yourself from harm, then I guess that Muslims don't believe in being true martyrs for their faith----unlike the thousands of Christians who have died rather than deny their religion. It takes no courage to lie.

I am a Shiite and I don't want to pretend to be Sunni. They choose the easy, most americanized way of Islam. I choose the harder Right way.

True, Mohammed did say that you could lie if you felt you were going to be harmed if you told the truth...He said this because God knows what is in our Hearts and if we say something and don't really mean it then he knows...
I don't think a Sunni would ever want to pretend he was Shiia and vice versa...There is too much animosity between these two sects of Islam...And quite a significant difference in beliefs...
But yes, they CAN if they WANT...God knows all and understands every situation...

There is no hard & fast rules for that but provided the circumstances that someone's life is at stake then it is allowed. But normally not liked by eachother's community to do so.The differences do'nt matter, the real thing is who shall be saved from hell & hounered with heaven.

There is nothing called Sunni Muslim or a Shia Muslim. A person is either a Muslim or not a Muslim.

Saving his/her life from danger is a duty on every Muslim. And to do that, one can even pretend to be a non-Muslim.

Dang, a religion that says lying's alright to save your own skin. I don't think I'll ever trust a Muslim again. No wonder kids in Kuwait cheat on their exams.

(but then, maybe the non-muslims are really lying muslims... ahhh, enough to cause paranoia!)
