We are leaving on Friday morning and will return on Saturday evening, They are both neutered males, and occaisionally wrestle with each other. When we go to work during the day we put one in the basement ( it is finished and heated) with food, water, litter box and toys. I don't know if we should let them together unsupervised for that long, or seperate them.. Any advice???

We have only had the second cat for a few months.. That is why we are leery of leaving them alone together for such a long period of time... What if something would happen while we were gone?

If you don't leave them together when you're at work I wouldn't leave them alone together overnight either.
I'd do the same thing you do when you go to work, put one in the basement.
Also you might want to have an agreement with a friend who'll go to your house and check on things, give fresh food, water and clean litter boxes...just in case something turns up and you don't get on until later than planned.

Why on earth would you seperate them when you go to work? I'd stop doing that, immediately, and see how they get on. Nothing wrong with wrestling, it's exercise and good play fun for them. When you're not there is the time they SHOULD be together, for companionship and to relieve boredom. My two cats wrestle almost constantly, then curl up together for a nap after wearing each other out ;) They sound like they're killing each other, but there's never been an injury on either one -- they're just playing.
Let them stay together for the week while you're at work, before your trip. See how they do. I bet they'll be happier for it, and it'll give them time to get used to being alone together, so that you can leave them together when you go for the weekend. Otherwise they're going to be bored and lonely, seperated without any stimulation, company, or entertainment while you're gone.
If you're not comfortable with letting them be together, though, then don't worry -- Friday morning to Saturday evening isn't a really long time. They'll be fine.

I would keep them together. Most male cats will wrestle with each other...it doesn't mean they hate each other. If they actually hated each other you would have vet bills from the fighting! Cats play a little rougher with each other than we would like, but that is a cat thing. One cat may be the dominant one in the family and occassionaly reminds the other one who's boss. Normal. Loneliness from missing you plus being separated from his 'friend', and locked up alone would be worse. They will be fine.

My husband and I are frequently out of town for the weekend, and we have a pair of cats. There has never been a problem with them being together, as long as they have food, water, and a litter box.

We leave our male and female cat unsupervised for a weekend. Yes they wrestle but they really enjoy each others company.

If you have to seperate them just for the day when you are at work i suggest you do the same thing when you are gone , or you might just be upset when you get home and see the mischief the have done while you were away.Better safe then sorry

Well, it depends on how much they fight. If they get really aggressive, then I'd definitely separate them, but if they just play wrestle then they'd probably be fine. Generally adult cats can be trusted home alone, so like I said, it depends on how aggressive they are.

If they show aggression towards one another, I would keep them separate. If they are just playing, leave them together. They will get some exercise when playing that way.

If you wouldn't normally leave them alone together, then no. Make other arrangements. Could you put the other one in the bathroom perhaps?
